Finger foods to start with...(not BLW)

We were just cleared to start finger foods and foods with more texture.  Pedi recommended bananas and mashed up sweet potatoes.  We have done puffs and mum mums...

What are some recommendations of what to start with, how to cook it( if necessary), and how to slice it up, And how much to give??

  • We started with Cheerios, then lightly toasted waffles cut up small, and egg yolks (boiled or scrambled)

How much will depend on your LO, some days more some days less. I always just fed mine until she was bored with eating lol.

    Have fun.

  • Watch out for constipation with the bananas - lots of babies handle them fine, but I can only give DS a banana every once in awhile.

For sweet potatoes, I bake them for about an hour....400 degrees? Then I cut them into 1/2" cubes. They are soft enough for ds to mash with his gums, but firm enough that he can pick them up. Don't over bake or they can turn into mush. Cleaning up sweet potato mush is not fun.

We also did pasta - spaghetti cut into tiny bits, and some other pasta that was really small. Sometimes we do shredded cheese. Steamed broccoli is also good - just cut it up small.

Other favs, meat of any sort, toast, veggie (sweet potato, carrot, the tops of broc, etc).

    Pancakes, french toast, eggs, pasta.

  • We started with mashed bananas, applesauce, I boiled apples, pears and cut them up very small. Mum Mums were also a good starter.

  • We like to do pancakes, toast, noodles (I break it up into puffs sized pieces)

bananas, avocado, peaches. (roll in some rice cereal or bread crumbs to make them less slippery)

shredded chicken is a favorite as well, and scrambled eggs (could do yolk only, if not comfortable)

I've found, pretty much anything soft can be made into a finger food. The main no nos are just hard stuff like raw carrots or apples. And anything like a grape should be cut in half for choking.

For how much to give, pedi said that a serving size is the size of their palm, so it's really not much.

  • Some things we've done are pancakes, mandarin oranges, very ripe pears cut up... then some "harder" foods to move onto from there are goldfish crackers, ritz crackers, small pieces of cheese, shredded pieces of chicken/turkey, etc. Good luck!
