Pregnant after 35

Rebuying EVERYTHING!!!!!

Just need to vent & see if anyone else is in the same situation.  I am 35, my children are 6 & 7.  I sold everything in a garage sale 3 years ago when I was positive we weren't having anymore kids.   Since I have gotten this surprise,  I am overwhelmed with everything we have to purchase.  My kids are so close in age that we had to buy 2 cribs.  I can't believe I will be getting a 3rd crib!!!  I try and laugh about it, but sometimes I want to cry!

Anyone else in the same boat???

Re: Rebuying EVERYTHING!!!!!

  • I am in the same boat! I actually gave away the last of the remaining baby items just a year ago! We do actually have our original crib, because it was one that converted into the headboard and footboard for a full-sized bed. However, since my DS was using this bed, we have to buy a new bed for him in order to convert his back to a crib, so there's no money saved there!

I'm looking to keep it simple, and buy the bare minimum that is needed, and hopefully will find some at consignment sales and/or buy off friends who are just finishing up the baby years. Mostly, I think about how all of the money I make is going to go to daycare after the baby arrives. I just went back to work two years ago, and just started enjoying spending a little bit on myself in the last year. I know I shouldn't be so shallow, but it makes me very sad that I have to give up "me money" when I've only just started enjoying it!

  • Yeah, my youngest kid is now 11 so needless to say, I've had to re-purchase everything needed for a baby.  The only exception is that my parents had my baby dresser at their house.  It's kind of expensive for sure!

  • Yep!  My DS is 17, so we absolutely had to buy all new stuff.  The only items I had still were mementos....1st stuffed animal, special blankets and his take home outfit.  It has actually been pretty fun buying everything but I do cringe every once in awhile when I think about how some of this stuff will only be minimally used!!

  • My youngest is 8, so we have to buy everything. Lucky for us, because we had been so generous in giving our things away to friends, they are helping us out with their own hand-me-downs (including a crib!). It is a pain, since we know this is our last, but it is fun shopping for baby things again.

I am in your same shoes. My DD turned 18 in May so I had only a few mementos that I had saved as well! Everything is so much different now though that most of what we had back then couldn't be used now anyway!

  • I held on to a bassinette and a wooden high-chair for 18 years (my kids are all young adults).  We had to rush a move the year prior to becomming pregnant and I determined that I just didn't have the space to store them in the new place...and as my adult kids did not have space, I opted to give them away.

Lo and behold a year later, I turned up pregnant...and did have to buy everything from scratch.  Luckily we took a couple trips down to IKEA and purchased really great stuff for little money.

  • My son is 7 and we still have the crib (largely because friends with younger children visit), but nearly everything else we'll need to re-buy; we'll probably get a new crib mattress while we're at it, as our cats have been living on it for a long time.
  • My only child is 14 and I literally have 2 baby blankets left over from when he was a baby.

This was VERY unexpected as when I married my DH we decided not to have kids. Two years later BAM! I am pregnant.

I am VERY, VERY lucky that my best friend has a 5 and 2 year old and is giving me all of her baby stuff other than a crib and furniture.

If I have a girl I will be set for clothes too. Hers are both girls.

  • ME! I have a 5 and 7 year old. We actually did plan this one but AFTER I cleaned out the basement of every single baby item except the crib. It's annoying but the upside is that all the new baby gear is way more high tech and fun. The down side is it's probably tacky to have a baby shower for as third baby so I am on my own this time!
