3 year old putting things in her mouth

last night as I was cooking dinner, I head DD spit something out as it bounced off the hardwood. My first instinct was to explain that we don't spit, but then I noticed that it was a bead that she had put in her mouth.  She had pulled it out of some clay masterpiece she had made for DH and I at school.  when I asked her why she put it in her mouth she told me she wante dme to fix it, but she never even asked me to.

It totally freaked me out.  She's been putting a lot of things in her mough lately, and while DH thinks it's normal for a 3 year old, I just feel like she should know better, and it scares me with all the little beads and stuff she has in her toys.  We had a very big disussion about how babies can't play with big girl toys because they eat them and if she's going to eat her toys she can't play with big girl toys becuase I don't want her to get hurt.  And we talked about what could happen if she got hurt (she couldn't play with her friends or go to school, or do fun big girl things, or even play with big girl toys) but really I'm petrified that she's going to choke on something.  I mean she's 3. She really shouldn't be putting anything in her mouth.

is this normal?

  • My almost 4 year old still puts everything in her mouth. I have to constantly watch her. I've explained what can happen and she even once witnessed paramedics performing CPR on someone choking on a piece of candy, but it still hasn't really hit home. She either doesn't understand or doesn't care. I feel your pain.

  • Yeah, same here but I am afraid DS will swallow a coin.

I get after DH not to leave any change in his pants because he leaves his pants on the floor.

I toss art that has beads or seeds to avoid choking.

I still inspect toys that DS has gotten, too.

DH says DS will learn but I do the above constantly.

Yes...I still catch one of my DDs tasting things that she shouldnt be. And she puts her hands in her mouth after touching dirty pool water. I really hope she stops soon.
  • DS does the samething. Typically it is larger things like his match box cars or his hands. So annoying I thought we were past this stage.
