Torn upper labial frenulum

So last night, DS felt and torn his upper labial frenulum (the web of skin by the top teeth that connect the gums and lip). It was bleeding bad for a while and this morning his lip was puffed up.

Has anyone else's LO done this? Is this something that I need to call the doctor about? Or does it heal on it's own?

Re: Torn upper labial frenulum

  • I would definitely call my doctor and ask them

  • My DS hit his with a spoon once and it bled a lot.  My step dad is a pediatric dentist so I called him because there was a lot of blood.  He said it is very sensitive so that's why it was bleeding so much.

However, in your case I might be a little concerned with the swelling.  Does he seem in discomfort?  Are you sure his teeth are ok?  Maybe just try to wiggle his teeth and make sure there is no movement or pain.  But if you're not sure I would call the doc/dentist to see what they say.

  • Thanks! When I saw all of the blood around his teeth, that was my first thought. I checked all of his teeth last night and this morning. They don't seem loose at all. I will call our doctor to see what he thinks. Thanks!

  • I would take him to the doc just to check the swelling and make sure it doesn't get infected. My DS has to have surgery on his (and the one under his tongue) because they are so thick, but they say most kids take care of it on their own, like your DS.

My son fell into a coffee table when he was 17 months old and cut his frenulum. It bled so much! I ended up taking him to a pediatric dentist, that said it would heal on its own (may always be cut), and that since his teeth weren't loose at all that he would be completely fine. I doubt they'll tell you any different, but it would definitely be worth a check. Poor LO!
