How many naps?

How many naps a day does your LO take?

I've been reading about trying to get onto a "natural schedule" for naps. I've been charting when she goes down so both mommy and baby can have some predictability to our days. What I've read says that at about 6 weeks baby will be taking approximately 3 naps a day. One in the morning, afternoon, and early evening. My DD takes about 4-5 naps a day. One longer 2 hour nap in the afternoon bookended by shorter naps that range from 30 min - 1 hour. Some days she takes more... Plus she sleeps about 10 hours a night (not in one stretch -- I feed and change her usually halfway through the night sometimes more).

I know some people are pro "baby schedule" baby wise, sleep solution, etc... I'm all about what works for mommy works for everyone therefore I do not have an opinion. But it seems that my DD is putting herself on a schedule. Eventually will she start STTN naturally or do I have to do the CIO with her to get her to not wake up at night?

Re: How many naps?

  • He gets up between 6-8 every morning, and goes down between 8-10 every night. He's up for about 2hrs a stretch, and snoozes in 30-45 minute increments with a HUGE nap between 2&3 for quite a while. After he wakes from that, he's has a snooze from about 5:30-6:30. At about 8, he turns into a terror and we retire to the other room.

  • I let DD do her own thing when it comes to sleep... if she is tired, she sleeps... it has become a schedule on her own, but that is of her doing.  She falls asleep at about 8, wakes up at 11 for a change/feed then sleeps til 2:30 change/feed, then 5:30 change/feed and then she'll usually wake/sleep/wake/sleep until I give up and go downstairs.  She will take several naps throughout the day, but I haven't determined a pattern to it yet!

I'd enjoy a few more solid hours, but I'm not going to make her CIO... as of now, she only really cries when she is hungry/dirty/gassy so I don't think it is fair to make her cry.  I actually like it because it is her way of telling me so I can fix what is wrong...

I don't think she would understand the cause/effect of CIO... she would just exhaust herself to sleep at this point.  When she is much older, if she has trouble going to sleep,  I will let her CIO, but I think for now she is too young.

What I really need to start doing is to try to go to sleep myself at about 9, so I can get another couple of hours that way!  But that never happens...

We let Adalyn dictate her naps to an extent.  She will go down for a nap in the morning, one in the mid-late morning, one in the afternoon, and maybe an evening nap.  She usually gets up around 7am and goes down about 9-10pm.  She takes some shorter naps of 45 min to 1 hour, and sometimes she will take 2 or 3 hour naps. If she starts to act fussy, sometimes it's because she wants to be swaddled and put down for a nap.

I think that whatever works for you is what you've got to do.  DH or I are always home with Adalyn (we work opposite days, except for 1 day a week when we're all off together) so it doesn't really matter that she's on a schedule or not.  She's also 5 months old--further along than FT May babies, but in some aspects at the same place as your  babies.  So, I'm not really sure that my advice on this is really all that helpful!

  • Naps have been a nightmare in my house the past 3 or 4 days. I'm praying today is better.

I agree with PP that they are WAY too young to CIO at this point.

We start bedtime typically between 9 and 930 and she's in bed by 10 at the latest and will sleep till 6-730. Usually I can get her to go back down for another 2-3 hours after a feed/change. After that its a crap shoot. For a while she would take a good 2-3 hour nap either in the morning or the afternoon (depending on the day) and then cat naps the rest of the time. Now I'm lucky if I can get the girl to take a couple cat naps. I don't know what her issue is but hopefully she sleeps here soon lol

  • My LO will take about 3 naps a day.  One in the morning, afternoon and early evening.  He is ready for bed around 8pm.  He did this schedule on his own.  The times aren't always exact but around the same time.

I transitioned him to his crb a couple weeks ago so he takes naps and sleeps at night in there.  It has been working well and hopefully (if he hasn't already) associates his nursery/crib with sleeping times.  When he napped downstairs with me and other noise I think he woke up before he was ready and now I don't have to tip toe around him during the day, I just go about my business as usual.
