Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Tips for dressing/diaper changes?

Hi everyone,

LO will be 9 months on Saturday. Changing diapers and drying up/dressing after a bath are a complete nightmare. She will not sit still for more than two seconds. Even with a second hand to help entertain her, she still attempts to sit up or roll over and will not let me do what I need to get done. I try to give her a toy, my cell phone, anything to keep her occupied long enough to get her dressed. But nothing works. Any tips?? I'm worried she will hurt herself!

Re: Tips for dressing/diaper changes?

  • Where do you dress/change her? We don't have a changing table and used to lay him on the bed - he would always flip over and try to crawl away. We now use the big stroller for his changing/dressing since we never use it. I wish we had inveeested in a changing table.

As far as letting him hold something to distract him, letting him hold a diaper is the best distraction right now. Not sure what we'll try next when he gets bored of that.

  • I get LO dressed/changed on the floor or in her crib. She still runs away but at least she can't hurt herself. I've also gotten really good at changing a baby while she's standing! If I do use her changing table (which is rare now) there's a mirror above, so if I go fast that'll keep her occupied. Worked better earlier on though.

My SIL moved her changing in table in front of the window for awhile. That was a great distraction.

My LO likes books to hold. At bedtime I'll give her her sippy right away so she drinks while I change. Toothbrush was a big hit for awhile. If H is around I'll have him talk/play with her while she's down. Goes so much faster as she's really occupied then.

  • we moved to the floor for that reason. he has the need to hold his diaper cream and chew on the non cap side. his shirt i have him sit up and his shorts i have him stand.

  • I haven't used our change table in a few months.  I change him on the floor on a changing pad and hold his feet the whole time so he can't crawl away.  If he tries rolling away I firmly say "Stay on your back please!"  I don't know if he understands, but he stops rolling.   I dress him while he's standing or trying to crawl away from me, haha.  Although he's started helping me more by lifting his foot to get his pants on or raising his arm and pushing it through the sleeve.  So I make a big deal about how awesome it is that he's helping mommy. :)

  • I would change her on your bed or the ground if she is a mover. My LO does much better when I don't rush things and let her crawl from me and I chase her/ play other games with her while we do any type of diaper change, outfit change, or putting lotion/ sunblock on.

  • I literally hand him everything in reach, one thing right after another after he throws the last thing. His favorite thing is saline spray, if he sucks on it hard enough he gets a taste and apparently it's delicious.

  • A helium balloon - you know the big silvery ones? - one of those.  With a long string so that if she lets go, she can still reach the sting to pull it back down.  My cousin gave DD one at a parade last month, and she was completely fascinated with it for diaper changes.  So that's the only time we let her play with it.  When it was deflating and dead, I bought her a new one.  The novelty is wearing off and it's not as effective as it used to be, but it was a good month and a half or so of easier diaper changes.

  • My nephew is like this. My SIL puts a little piece of tape on his finger and it surprisingly occupies him during the diaper change. Putting clothes on the kid is a total wrestling match.
  • What worked for me was changing up where I changed LO at.  The floor, changing table or my bed wasn't working.................so i had start using the pool table and kitchen table ha ha.  Whatever works.

This is hysterical - because it's my husband's trick!  We had some leftover from my birthday and he always has me grab one to give to the baby to play with he does changes.

I use the floor method and have become adept at doing it while he's moving/crawling around.  With clothes I do shirt while he sits on my lap in front of the mirror and pants/socks mid-crawl.

  • My LO hates dressing after a bath too. We dress him on the bathroom vanity counter with a folded towel underneath for padding. We now have him "brush" his teeth while diapering and dressing in PJs. I have an infant toothbrush and toms of Maine baby toothpaste, I put it on the brush and say "brush your teeth" and I dress and diaper him while he chews the brush. Works great to distract him and he's doing something health so it's a twofer!
  • Thanks for all the tips ladies!
