velamentous cord insertion

We had our A/S recheck today and it was confirmed we do have velamentous cord insertion. The Dr. explained it as the cord is growing from the side of the placenta and not the center like it should. I will be going in every 4 weeks for an U/S to monitor his growth as this sometimes prevents the baby from getting all the nutrients it needs. She said that is rare and if it happens we would go at 37 weeks. Of course Dr. Google talks about other complicateiosn the may come with birth but I am trying to avoid reading to much into that as of yet.

Anyone heard of this. Have it?

  • I'm no help on the subject I just wanted to say sorry you're dealing with this. Hopefully regardless of the position LO will be just fine :)

I had marginal cord insertion with DD2.  Like you, I had extra ultrasounds to track the growth.  There was also initial concern because I had partial placenta previa which didn't resolve until 32 weeks.  If it had persisted, I would have needed a c-section.

At delivery, the nurses and doctors studied the placenta a bunch.  The cord was indeed all the way to one side of the placenta but they said it was a very strong insertion and that the cord was nice and thick.  DD2 didn't suffer at all and was 8 pounds, 5 ounces at 39 weeks gestation.

I wish you the best.  I am sure that with extra monitoring any issues would be seen.
