Sassy attitude-is it the age?

DD will be 3.5 in a few weeks and has developed a super sassy attitude.  She talks back, puts her hands on her hips, and is pretty rude.  I've tried talking to her about it but it just continues.  I can't stand it and am afraid that she will talk to her friends at school this way.  Is this normal behavior for 3.5?  What works to get it to stop?

Re: Sassy attitude-is it the age?

  • yes - I think the age is approximately 3.5 - 18 for the sassy behavior - LOL!

Seriously - look at yourself and make sure you (and others) are modeling the right behavior - are you saying please and thank you and asking for things?  Are you putting your hands on your hips?

I think when your LO is rude - just say - "that's rude, please ask again nicely"  and when she does ask nicely w/o prompting, notice it and praise it.  And, then tell DH about it.

Yep, age.  DD has been trying this out and ditto with modeling the right behavior.  I simply say "I don't understand 'rude.'  Try asking nicely."  I also told her that when she talks rudely, that means I don't have to listen.  So I carry on a conversation with DH until she changes the attitude.

  • Dd is 5 and still does it. I can't stand it. She's also a horrible listener.

  • DD will be 4 next week and this started for us in the last month or 2.  We call it her "sassy voice" and using "sassy words" (depending on the context).  In either case we reinforce to her that her sassy voice or sassy words are not acceptable and that she will not get what she is after when she uses them.  We try our best to stay calm and even toned when handling this (but OMG do I just want to slap her sometimes!?!?!? - don't worry I won't actually!).  We also strive to praise good, polite manners.  Lots and lots of praise.

I tell my husband all the time that I worry if she's like this now what on earth does she have in store during her teenage years!  Scares the crap out of me b/c I teach high schoolers and those kids can be SO sassy!  I don't want DD to be like that so we have a 0 tolerance policy, 1 time gets a calm warning, 2nd gets her to her room.  DH says I am too harsh sometimes, IDK....GL!!!
