Someone tell me what to do....

I am having a slight panic attack here. The Director of HR approached me and told me to apply for the HR coordinator position (starting position, but usually advances within a year or two). It?s a job that I would love.  It?s normal 9-5 Monday-Friday hours, but right now I work Friday-Tuesday 6-1:30.  I would only see Charlie for a  few hours in the morning and night, not to mention we would have to hire a babysitter because my husband works wonky hours (law enforcement). I should just apply and let everything work out, right?  I?m doing the right thing for my family long term and babysitters are not the worst thing in the world.  Ahhhh I?m so conflicted.

  • Applying for the job doesn't necessarily mean you'll get it, although it sounds like the person in charge wants you for the position. The biggest thing that stood out to me is "It's a job that I would love."  That is priceless IMO.

Similar to you, me/H work different shifts so we have a part time babysitter we found through care.com and we adore her.

If it were me, I would apply for the job and go from there. Good luck!

  • Jobs you would love don't come around every day.  Yes, apply.  I see Gabe 2hrs a day during the week (sometimes 3).  He is happy, well adjusted, loves daycare, and we have a blast on the weekends.

Why would you have to hire a babysitter?  Plenty of daycares are open from 6-6.

  • Weigh the pros and cons.

Does it mean more money? If so, would it be worth it when you add in the cost of child care?

Do you get benefits now?  Would you with this new job?  More sick/vacation time?

Pros - No more chasing naked guests.  A job you love.

Cons - Less time with Charlie/DH.  No more free afternoons.

I live just 5 minutes from work, and in the middle of no-where, so I would need to drive 30+ minutes to the nearest daycare (an hour round trip), vs. a babysitter/nanny that would just need to watch her from 1:30 until I get home around 5ish

I now see why you are more stressed.  She'll be with a babysitter for the first time.  I didn't realize your H watched her until you got home.  The good news is that a babysitter for 4hrs a day isn't too much and the rest of the time she'll be with your H.

We've had good luck with care.com.  GL!!!

It would be more money, which means the babysitter cost would be taken care of. Same crappy benefits, but a better work environment....a LOT less stress.

I would soooo love not to deal with naked people Big Smile or guests in general. I love hospitality, but the quantity of rude/entitled attitudes has blown out of control lately. I have been a human punching bag for 6 years..I need change

I'll just jump in and say it sounds like it's something for you :) You have all the kinks worked out, and if it's a job you would love then go for it..

Ps. I wouldn't want to be a punching bag :} so definately go for change. Good luck!

  • Thank you for the encouragement everyone! The application is in. I guess I'm just a little stuck because I have always wanted to be a SAHM and the original plan was to stay in my job until DH gets a full-time law enforcement job and then I could quit. That could take years though (one of our friends just got a full time after 5 years, and DH is only 1 year into the process.) Now I feel like I'm giving up on Charlie and going back to my career path. My chest acutally hurts right now just thinking about how much I will miss her.

This alone is worth it, as someone who gambled and took a new job while on maternity leave I can tell you this makes all the difference in the world.  Good luck!

  • If you are happier in your job, you'll be happier at home and you'll appreciate the time you spend with Charlie that much more.

You are not giving her up for your career!  Happy mom = happy baby.  Also, more financial security and stability is the BEST thing for her.

  • It really sounds like this would be a great change for you! I say go for it. I mean, what have you got to lose? Even if you get the job, you still can turn it down if you changed your mind. But from everything you've said, it seems like it could be a great change for you.  And like everyone else has said, happy mom=happy baby!
