Pulling Hair and/or at ears??

Yesterday my LO started pulling at his ears and hair. I think he only pulls his hair because he is missing his ears. Does that mean ear infection? or pain of some sort. We have a doctors appt on Wednesday and he really doesn't seem any different mood wise. Should I call anyways??

Re: Pulling Hair and/or at ears??

  • My DS often pulls on his ears during feedings.  I think he's just looking for something to do with his hands.  Then again, it never hurts to get your pediatrician's advice.  I'd guess that if he's still acting normal otherwise that it's probably fine.

  • If he doesn't seem to be in pain, I don't think there's anything wrong. Dd found her ears last week, and I thought the same thing, but the more I watched her, she was just feeling and tracing the pattern in her ears like she does a new toy with texture. I've also seen her stroking her hair like she does mine sometimes. Keep an eye on it and if he seems irritated, I'd take him in just in case, but it sounds like he's just discovering another body part :-)

  • My little guy pulls at his ears whenever he's having a meltdown. I thought maybe ear infection since he was screaming and crying at the same time, but the doctor said his ears looked perfectly fine and it is common for them to tug at their ears at this time.  She said just keep an eye on it and if it gets worse or he starts running a fever to take him back in.

  • Our ped said its normal at this age due to them finding their ears.  DD does it sometimes when she's tired or frustrated.

  • I read somewhere that babies pulling on their eyes is a sign of teething. DS pulls on his every now and then. They dont seem to hurt him, so I just chalked it up to teething.
  • My Pediatrician and my sister's both said that it was teething related. Apparently they're feeling the nerves tingling in their gums/jaws and as they're connected to the ears, the kids pull on the ears or the hair behind the ears to get it to stop. Asher did it a lot when his teeth were breaking through on the bottom.
