So, today my sweetie had a follow up with his Doc about some testing on his thyroid. He called me afterwards and told me that he discussed us TTC with the doc and asked the doc to refer him for an SA. [Doc said to talk to me first and that most couples try for at least six months before doing any infertility testing.]
I asked him WTH and his response was that he and his ex wif had TTC for a year unsuccessully.
1) feel a little betrayed that I am just finding this out
2) I know nothing really about SA's, who gets them and why one would get them so I am hoping for some feedback. [I am also going to google it when I get home from work.]
Re: Input from anyone who's man has had an SA
Make that at least six months 12 months.
So,,, um what are you asking?
MH had one done after we'd TTC for 12 months. It was painless and fairly inexpensive ($140)
I would be upset about just finding that out as well.
It doesn't hurt anything to get an SA done. If he wants one for piece of mind I wouldn't have a problem with it. Most couples have an SA done after trying for a year unsuccesfully as part of IF testing. Just becuase he and his ex-wife didn't get pregnant doesn't necessarily mean that there is anything wrong with him.

They usual say don't bother with testing until a year without success or if there is a known issue.
That sucks that you didn't know about his trying with his ex for a year, however, now that you know maybe you should inquire a bit into that. Did she have any testing done? Did she have IF? Or was it suspected to be him? If it was suspected to be him, then I'd say go ahead and get the SA. But otherwise, I would just keep trying and see what happens for 6 months if you're over 35 or a year if you're under.
Most of the time testing doesn't begin until a year of trying, but with the info. he gave the doctor about the ex wife, that might raise the reason for the concern. I'd feel a little betrayed too, how long have y'all been TTC? It's good that he got it out there with the doctor, but I personally think this is something that would come up either when things started getting serious (marriage and kid talk) or at least when y'all decided to TTC. I think SA are ordered for men TTC for a year of trying to begin eliminating a possible cause of not conceiving. This comes along with other tests that women begin getting at the same time. The SA will basically analyze his sperm to look for any reasons to be concerned.
(And with him and the ex TTC for a year, I don't know if y'all TTC for however long is the same to base testing on. That puts the questions and feeling of guilt on him when y'all may conceive naturally with no problems.)
Sorry, I realized I was so annoyed that I really didnt't clearly state my question. [

Q: Is it routine to have your man get an SA if after 6 months [I am with you on the 12 months especially due to my PCOS] as a normal part of ruling out any T-TTC? Or are there usually specific other things to look out for that would make this more important/necessary?
No, 12 months for women under the age of 35 and 6 months over age 35.
Seriously thank you all for the input. I am sure I came across as a moron. I guess I maybe am making a bigger deal than it should be b/c I am so mad that he didn't tell me about TTC previously especially since we have been TTC for four months now.
I am going to have a talk with him when I get home about his past TTC experience and get some insight on that. [omg, this day is dragging now] And hopefully I can show him some of the stuff I have been reading to get a little more in touch with the ins and outs of TTC to help ease his mind.
Sorry again for being a little dramatic. LoL
Thanks for the feedback! How was he diag with low T? [was it just part of a normal annual blood work or was something wrong?]
Anyhow, I hope that everything looks good for you and your hubby!! I will be sending out warm thoughts and vibe for you both for tomorrow's results!
