How many bottles and what size?

I know people say not to stock up on a specific brand of bottles just in case your LO doesn't take to that particular brand.  But I also know I need to have bottles on hand before I actually need them.  I just don't want to have to run out to buy them when its time to introduce the bottle.

Anyway, I will be taking off work for about 15 weeks, and plan to start introducing a bottle maybe a few weeks before returning to work (maybe around 10-11 weeks).  DH will be home with LO for another 8 weeks after I go back to work (so he can easily wash bottles if need be).  LO will be about 23 weeks before starting day care.

Anyway, I am trying to determine how many of each size I need?  I don't want to stock up on 4 oz bottles if I won't get alot of use out of them.  I just don't know when you move up to the bgger bottle.

BRU is having a sale (buy one get one 50% off) on all thier bottles, so I figured I get some to start.  I was thinking about getting 2 packs (3 bottles per pack) of each size.  So then I'd have 6 4oz and 6 9oz.  (BTW - I already have a free 4oz bottle).  So I'd really have 7 4oz and 6 9oz.  Does that sound reasonable?  Or should I only get one pack of 4oz and 3 packs of 9 oz (then I'd have 4 4oz and 9 9oz).

Thoughts?

At 20-week anatomy scan found IUGR (Intrauterine Growth Restriction), and very low Amniotic Fluid.  Now, I'm High Risk and have weekly ultrasounds to monitor fluid and growth.  If baby runs out of room or is too growth restricted, they will deliver ASAP.  My current goal is to make it to 28 weeks!

we have 6 4oz bottles and that has been plenty so far.   i have not really gone back to work yet.    Since you will be off for so long, I would get a few now and stock up later.

  • We used drop ins, as I had enough to wash with pump parts, bottle nipple, pacis, etc. I sent 4-4oz bottles to daycare until around 8 months, when we started sending 4-5oz bottles.

  • We have six 9 ounce tommee tippee bottles.  He takes 3 at DC and DH washes every night.  We have never felt we needed more.  We tried a few different brands, but TT worked best for us.  He doesn't take more than 5-6 ounces.
  • My DD is 3.5 months and she takes 4oz at a time when she eats from a bottle.  We have six 4oz Dr. Brown's bottles, and that has been plenty so far.  I know some babies eat more than that at a time though.

I use the Medela bottles to pump into - I think I have about 8 of the 5oz ones.  I could do with less of those, but it's nice to have extra.

I would still suggest maybe only buying one or two bottles for now until you know which one your baby will prefer.  They seem to go on sale pretty often and BRU coupons are pretty easy to come by.  I also think you'd be ok to just buy the smaller ones for now and not stock up on bigger bottles yet, since your baby probably won't need those for quite a while.

  • When we started we had 1 3pk of Dr. Brown's bottles (4oz).  (This was before I went back to work).  This was plenty at first since we were giving one bottle a day and we didn't know if he'd take them.  He did.

DH didn't love them, so we went out and got a 2 pack of Tommee Tippees (9oz).  The little guy takes those also so we got another 2 pack.  (Total = 7 bottles since we still use the Dr. Browns)

When I went back to work we got 4 more of the Tommee Tippees because they're easier to put frozen milk sticks in because of the size.  My son is in daycare 5 days a week, drinks 4 bottles a day (4oz each).  We have 11 bottles.  And that's worked out fine for us.  But I definitely wouldn't buy more than 1 package at first.  If he doesn't take that brand, you'll still be around to breastfeed him and you can go out and buy something else.  There will be other sales.

  • I have 4 ounce and 9 ounce sizes and have never used the 9 ounce.

DS never takes more then 4 ounces at a time and he is almost 7 months.

I really like the advent bottles and the bottles that came with my medela pump.  I despise the Dr. Browns ones...they leak for me and are a complete PITA to clean.

Thanks for all the suggestions ladies.  I agree I should wait before I stock up on one brand!  But it is so hard not to want to have everything in place before LO arrives.  I must be entering the nesting phase . . . only 2 more weeks (ish).Big Smile
