April 2012 Moms

My kid hates the carseat..

Hi ladies! I am new to TB and a first time mommy. My DD was born on April 12th. I am coming to you to ask if your babies HATE their carseat? My DD will scream from the moment she is strapped in until we remove her from the seat. We have made sure the seat is inserted properly at the base and that it's level, hanging toys and even a different car seat. We also live in a hot climate so I have tried putting ice packs in the seat prior to putting her in to keep her cool. Nothing is working. Any tips or advice to make car trips better would be greatly appreciated.

  • Mine does too. It is starting to get a little better now that he can play with toys, but still only about 10 min. For weeks, he would scream the moment we strapped him in to the moment we took him out. I also live in a hot climate (FL) and we start the car before putting him in to cool it off a bit. We are driving 16 hrs in 3 weeks (ugh) and plan on buying a portable fan to help keep cool too. It also helps with DH sits in the back with him. I have a harder time sitting in the back due to my motion sickness.

  • Ugh yes. My my 3 month old DD either sleeps or screams. There is no in between. I'm really considering becoming a hermit because I hate driving with her. Sure hoping this gets better soon.

oh yeah, some things i have tried are, music louder than her screams, static radio louder than her, having her window down just a bit to make a wind noise, singing to her, complete quiet and talking to her.  They haven't really worked for me but give some a try and maybe they'll help you.

  • Good luck with the 16 hour drive! We too have thought of using a fan but I'm such a nervous nelly about it falling off and hitting her especially if we had to make a quick stop or something. I sit in the back with her also but she is still only happy if I shake the seat to make her head rock gently.

  • Thank you Shellpie, I will definitely try some of your suggestions. Anything to help. My husband also said he is considering becoming a hermit because of this. Lol, I think I would die.

  • I tell DS "Babies have to stay in their carseats. If I take you out of your carseat, I could get in trouble, and then you wouldn't have your mommy when you need her." Talking to him like this and reassuring him helps sometimes. I also have planned car time around a time when I know he'll be fed and likely to fall asleep. Sometimes I turn up static on the radio and that calms him.

He used to HATE the carseat, but he's gotten better. However, we still have those drives where he screams regardless of anything I do. It's awful I know :(

Yeah, we only plan on using it for long rides when someone is in the back with him. He gets so sweaty and the screaming heats him even further :/ We have also tried the static, windows down, etc without much luck. Hope they grow out of it soon!

  • You ladies have NO IDEA how relieved I am to read this post......My DS HATES the car seaat and screams to the point he coughs then its back to screaming. I feel so horrible....sometimes I try to pull over and calm him but it never works....he just wants out! We are also going on a 12 hr drive at the end of August. DH and I are starting to get pretty worried about it b/c he screams so much. Glad to know we are not alone in this!!

  • I don't have any advice because I have never had to deal with this but I noticed that our daughter's share a birthday so I felt the need to point it out.  Big Smile

Also, I wish I had some advice because I can't imagine that being easy to deal with. I'm sorry.

Yeah, pulling over never helps. He just gets even more pissed that we put him back in.

  • For whatever reason G seems to do a lot better when he has a taggies blanket with him. Maybe try that or something similar. Now that he's got some coordination in his hands, he loves to be holding something.
  • DS was like this. He would scream until he spit up, then scream some more. It was awful. The only thing that helped was having someone sit back there with him. Which meant wedging an adult between his seat and my daughter's convertible seat. It's gradually gotten better (we can take 10 minute trips with only 50% crying) but if he's tired or anywhere close to feeding time forget about it.  I've cried on more car rides than I care to remember.

We've tried singing, static, putting him asleep in the seat *wakes almost immediately), mirror so he won't feel alone, a blanket with my smell on it. The only thing that we did around the time things improved was remove the infant head insert. Maybe it lets him move his head around more or doesn't make him sweat so much.  Or maybe it has nothing to do with it.

  • With my DS (3 on Friday), we moved him to a RF convertible seat when he had problems screaming constantly. That seemed to work for him, and he was a happy baby in the car after that.
