Feeding baby to sleep is bad?

I've been bottle feeding (BM) LO to sleep because he stays asleep for the night on most nights. A friend of mine told me this is bad because he won't learn to fall asleep on his own. Anyone heard of this? Is it true?

I did it until recently. Now I watch LO and when I see he's almost asleep I put him in the crib. He has transitioned pretty well!

Some people say put baby to sleep awake, but if he is sleeping through the night with your system... I wouldn't mess with it

I hope not.. this is how DS goes to sleep just about every night.. but he also doesnt take a paci..

I nursed DD to sleep until she was 15 months old, it worked for us.

We did it forever.

Now, we still give Edie a bedtime bottle, but she falls asleep on her own. A relaxing bottle of milk with snuggles is part of her bedtime routine.

She's an egg-cellent sleeper!

I nurse E to sleep as I did for L until I weaned him. They aren't going to need us to help them go to sleep forever. I love giving them that comfort and I know I'll miss it one day.

I'd file that under "something to worry about when it becomes a problem." Most babies fall asleep while eating at this point. If you can, try to break them of it before they hit 1 y/o and you are supposed to take the bottle away. That seems so far down the road, though. If your DC is sleeping well now, then don't worry about it.

I nurse her to sleep and it is my favorite part of the day. Lately she's woken up a bit when I put her down but closes her eyes and falls back to sleep within a min or two.

I nursed H to sleep until almost a year when she weaned and now she is a kick azz sleeper.

My pediatrician told us this at our 2 month appointment and it surprised me too. He said it was a problem because babies associate bottles with sleeping and if they wake up in the middle of the night, the only way they can go back to sleep is if they have a bottle instead of putting themselves back to sleep. I say if she's sleeping through the night, you are fine doing this for as long as it works for you. That's what we are doing and I guess we will deal with the consciquenes later!

They say you should keep them awake so you can put them to bed sleepy, not asleep. That's all well and good in theory. Actually doing it, not so much.

I've tried not to feed to sleep just so that they don't get used to it -- but it still happens occasionally. I do think it's not ideal, but it's also not the worst thing in the world. If you want to transitition out it, just feed him late at night, but try to keep him awake. He'll still have a full tummy to (hopefully) sleep well, but also has a chance to learn to sleep on his own.

I nurse LO to sleep every night and for most naps. She will fall asleep on her own with paci, rocking and white noise so I know she's not dependent on it, but it has been our nighttime routine from the beginning so I don't want to change it up. She sleeps about a 6-7 hour stretch.

I nurse her to sleep at night. But she will sleep for 7-8 hours so I'm not messing with it! I know we will have to break the habit eventually... But it works and I need sleep.

I nurse to sleep about 80% of the time he goes to sleep, including naps. I'm not worried about nighttime sleep, but I'm hoping he transitions smoothly into dc in a few weeks without refusing to sleep completely...he does fall asleep in vibrating bouncers or swings some, so I'm hoping those things save nap time!
