XP: For those using the Rock n Play

We have had LO in our room in the RnP since day 1. We transitioned him into his room in the RnP about 3 weeks ago and it went well. Last weekend we tried transitioning to the crib. Friday night went well and then Saturday and Sunday were awful. He was waking up every hour crying, we would pick him up, get him back to sleep and put him in the crib and he would immediately wake up crying. Last night we just resorted to the RnP again.

He won't sleep in anything that isn't hugging his body (swing and RnP). When we try the crib, PnP, the sleeper in the PnP, etc...he will not sleep and just cries. He does the same thing when I try to put him in for naps during the day. Do any other RnP users have this problem? I'm afraid I've created a monster who is never going to sleep on a flat surface. Help! What worked for you to transition from the RnP?

  • We have not transitioned out of the rnp yet (LO is taking his first nap in his crib was we speak..) but have you tried swaddling? I also just put a pool noodle under LO's crib mattress to create a slight incline as he also does not like to sleep on flat surfaces.

  • Yeah, I would try swaddling with a Swaddle Me or something that velcros that he can't get out of.  My LO was sleeping longer stretches in his infant car seat which I put in the crib.  I then decided to experiment with swaddling and laying him flat in the crib.  So far he gives he an initial 5-7 hour stretch of sleep.  I think he startles himself when laying flat with his arms loose and was waking himself up.

  • Swaddle is a must for my LO when he is on a flat surface. Otherwise he does wake himself up every hour. I still use the RnP for some naps just because its been so warm.
  • We swaddle with a blanket from the waist down.  He HATES his hands being swaddled, but I think that's a lot of the problem, he wakes himself up with his hands.  I just feel like it's a lose-lose situation.

We swaddle with a Halo sleep sack that has the Velcro straps so that she can't get out, although last night we did it with just 1 arm swaddled and it worked pretty well.  When we transitioned her from the RNP we started with naps and then did it overnight.  We also have a Sleep Sheep, which is a sound machine that plays waves crashing, etc.  have you tried that?

  • I'd try swaddling his arms one more time, even if he acts like he hates it. My daughter is always really fussy right before she goes to sleep, and she thrashes around in her SwaddleMe like she's a prisoner trying to escape a straitjacket. But once she calms down in it, she sleeps for much longer than she would without it.

Lately she likes sucking on her fist, so sometimes we leave her with one arm out.

  • Our LO is the same wya about her arms, and ofcourse she wakes herself up all of the time because theyre out! Have you tried a thicker blanket? I strip her down to her diaper and wrap her in a thicker furry blanket. The stretch and fabric give a little so she can move her arms. Also, when you tuck under, do it low so if he does get his arms up he doesnt pull the blanket up in front of his face.  We have a Houdini and she will wriggle out of everything!!

  • I say keep trying and eventually he'll sleep in it.

We used the RnP exclusively for 4 weeks then I started laying him on the couch next to me for naps so he would get use to stretching out (and I was too lazy/tired to get up and put him in the RnP). After that we alternated between putting him in his crib or in the PnP for naps and for bedtime.  Another thing we did at night is to swaddle him so he still felt cuddled and that helped him get use to laying flat again.  It also helped with him walking himself up.  Weeks 5 and 6 my mom was visiting and he slept in the room with her but this week he's back in his crib and doing pretty good.

I'm having the opposite problem now.  DS isn't like the RnP so much during the day.
