Working moms who exercise regularily..

when?  I've been trying to go to the gym at 5am but then I feel tired all day. Do you do shorter work-outs more regularily or fewer, longer ones each week? Any suggestions?

I feel I really need a work out schedule that is the same each week. Otherwise it doesn't happen.

  • I work out as soon as DS goes to bed. I do a 30 minute workout (Jillian Michaels). This works for me because I'm a night owl! I absolutely could NOT get up any earlier than I do to workout!

  • I just started a few weeks ago. I do DVDs at home. It's not easy but I try to wake up early & get a minimum 30 minutes in a day. I know it's not a whole lot but I don't beat myself up if I only wake up with enough time to do 20-25 minutes. It's a whole lot better than zero. Once my endurance builds up I'm sure I'll be able to do more. I do it in the mornings because I know that I'll never get to it at night but some evenings I go for a walk with DS. Good luck.

I do the same workout, I do it as soon as I get home from work while DH puts dishes away, makes dinner, packs B's lunch, etc., every other day.  On alternate days, he works out while I do dishes/dinner/lunch.  So we each only work out 2-3 days during the work week, but that's better than nothing.

  • Sometimes I'll go running before work or ride my bike to and from work.  Mostly, though, I'll go running after work as soon as I get home.  I try to work out both weekend days, though, so that gets some of my weekly workouts out of the way.  Then I don't feel so guilty for missing a day or two during the week.

  • I usually run immediately after putting DD in bed for the night.  When the heat hit the last two weeks though, I had to push my runs to 9pm or later to try to beat the heat.  I run at least every other day.  Like you, I can't get my butt up out of bed any earlier than I have to.

Do you run with LO?  I was thinking of trying this.  But I usually start cooking dinner as soon as I get home.  So maybe I could cook a couple of meals on the weekend and that would give me a couple nights to run after work.

Maybe I should look into the Jillian Michaels DVD.  Is it a good cardio workout?  I do weights and pilates at home right now.  It is my cardio that is suffering.

  • I get up at 4:30 to do my Insanity DVDs.  I'm a morning person so it doesn't bother me to get up that early but I do get tired at like 10am so I just have a half a cup of coffee and I'm good.  I go to bed super early (9pm).

  • The thing that worked best for me was exercising right after DD went to bed.  If I get up earlier, I'm just in a bad mood and tired all day.

DH and I started working out last summer.  We would do the 30 DS dvd after our kids went to bed each night.  It was not what I wanted to do at 8:30 at night, but there was no other time.

Now, I go to the gym M,W,F mornings from 6-6:45 and Saturday morning from 8-8:45.  The days I don't go I do a dvd at home after the boys go to bed.  I like doing it in the a.m. b/c then it's done for the day.  I do feel tired from getting up that early, but I really want to find time for exercise, so there isn't really any other option.

In a perfect world I would work out around 9 a.m. every day, but yeah.....

When I worked in an office, our office had a gym so I could work out before picking up LO from daycare. A lot of people worked out at lunch but I never liked doing that. Now I work from home so I usually work out in the late morning since my schedule is usually booked during lunch.

30 Day Shred is 3 mins of strength, 2 mins of cardio and 1 min of abs for 3 circuits.  You are moving the whole time though, so it feels like a pretty good cardio workout to me.

  • How long have you been doing the morning thing?   It takes a little while to get into the swing of it

  • Working Dad who exercises regularly here.

The obvious one is taking baby for a walk after work. Sometimes we do it as a family, sometimes just one of us takes him while the other gets a little break.

Mostly you just need to negotiate with your partner a time when they will provide child care so you can work out.

-My son was born in April 2012. He pretty much rules.
  • DH works 24 hr shifts so I don't go those days (only 10 of them a month) and Mondays (my first day back at the office) I usually am zonked by the end up the day (I leave my house at 6 so there's no going to gym before has to be after as the gym opens at 5) But I usually go no less than 3 times a week, usually 4, strive for 5. I have days that are 45 min of lifting plus 30 of cardio and days of 45 min of cardio plus abs.
  • During the school year I leave Liam at daycare twice a week and go home, work out for 30 minutes, and then go pick him up.  I try to do a workout at least once a week after he goes to bed and I try to hit Saturday or Sunday (or both of I'm feeling really ambitious).  That works out to 4-5 thirty minutes sessions a week.  I mostly use the elliptical.

I've been going (inconsistently) since Feb.  I'm only making it 1-2 times a week.

Oddly enough I used to go to the gym every morning at 5am before having DS and I had no problems.  I actually am a morning person.  But now that I have a toddler it seems I have no energy and no motivation.
