Gentle way to switch daycare for 3 y/o at the same time as new baby coming?

XP:

We are considering switching day care providers very soon, but are expecting baby #2 in 9 weeks. Everything I've heard or read says not to make other major changes around the time a new baby is born, and to keep your older kid(s) schedule as similar as possible to help them better adapt. So despite this wonderful advice, I am considering switching daycare providers to one MUCH closer to home, and DD also really wants to go to pre-school, so that will be new for her too. Plus, if I'm home for 12 weeks with a new baby, I dont really want to pay to have someone else watch my kid, I would really love to have her home with me for the majority of my leave. I hate that I have to be away from her so much, so I would love some extra time with her at home with me.

I'm wondering if anyone has been in a similar situation or has any tips. My DD is usually pretty easily adaptable, and luckily is very verbal so she can easily tell us what is bothering her. I want to do this all as gentle as possible, but it is really important to me to switch daycares at this point. It just so happens to right before this baby is coming...

Thanks for any tips or experience anyone has to offer.

  • I had a very similar experience actually. My son was 21 months and I was 6 weeks from my due date when our DCP quit on us (in home day care, blah blah blah). She had given plenty of notice but we were in the position of having to switch providers for just the remaining month of pregnancy. We couldn't afford to have him in day care while I was on leave, and we didn't know what we'd want in a provider for two of them, so we decided to just look for something temporary. He did great. We found another in home provider who was great with him and watched him until just before the baby came. I was having some early labor signs and I'm a teacher so I chose to get off early (didn't want to go into labor in the classroom) and I had a week and a half home with him before baby came. Then baby came and now I'm home full time. It was a lot of change in a short time but our guy is pretty adaptable and he did fine with all of it. I think if you just keep talking about everything and keep your own stress and emotions calm and upbeat that makes a big difference.

  • No advice, just commiseration. Our 3 year old has been on the wait list for a preschool that we feel very strongly is the best program for her and we were just finally able to get her enrolled but the session starts on my due date. She's been home with me since she was born, though she does take a class daily (karate, sculpture, ballet, t-ball, early literacy) but they are classes that I am in the room for. I'm pretty nervous about introducing her to all that change at once. Good luck!

Good luck to you too! It might be a challenge for your DD to start pre-school at the same time, but the benefit is that she's probably old enough that you can talk it up that its a big girl thing to do. I would just keep talking about it (when she is interested in listening) so she understands that these two big evens will be happening around the same time. I plan to do the same, once we finalize our plans.
