Oh the things great grandmas say...

Just had to share some doozies from DH's grandma over the 4th. To give you an idea, she made a passing comment when I was pregnant about how OF COURSE the first thing you feed a baby is mashed potatoes and gravy...uh, yeah. So, this past visit, she was really concerned that we weren't giving DD rice cereal yet. Sil was holding DD at the time and, while squeezing her fat little thigh said "I don't think she's hurting for cereal."Then, she kept talking about playing patacake, and even said to my mil "why haven't you taught her to play patacake?" um, pretty sure that's a 8-9 month thing, and DD is hitting plenty of other fun milestones! I thought mil was going to smack her if she didnt drop it. At one point DD took a nap and she kept insisting I go put a blanket on her. I just said oh, she's fine."And finally the big one, she was holding DD at the table and wanted to hive her something to play with. She looked around, says "well I hate to give her a fork but" and starts wiping off her dirty fork!! Mil beat me to it, grabbing it away and saying "then DON'T."If we saw her more often I'd be pretty frustrated, but it's infrequent enough that we can just laugh.

How old is great grandma?  DS great grandma is 87 and recently diagnosed with Alzheimer's, but has always been mean.  She called my dad in a frenzy asking if I had gotten married before having DS.  Thing is, she was at my wedding and even asked me if I bought my dress at the dollar store.

  • 76-78, something like that. I wouldn't call her mean just opinionated!

  • Reminds me of the time my grandfather was insisting that DS have a taste of chocolate fudge sauce.  At 2 months old!  Yes, it's a family recipe, but DS can be introduced to it when he's old enough to digest it.

  • At least the family backed you up and knew to watch her! My MIL is always offended when I tell her things have changed in the last 40 years!
  • Yea, MIL was pretty young when she had DH, and I think she has pretty strong feelings about her mom - great grandma - overstepping when DH was a baby, so she's definitely very aware of trying to respect DH's and my "authority" or whatever you want to call it.  It's great, and much better than the alternative, but sometimes she almost goes too far to where I'm like, "uh, you can walk over to me and take your granddaughter and hold her, and I promise I won't get mad!"

Omg! A fork! What there wasn't a knife available lol?

My dh's Nonnie came to visit and was here for ds's christening. My brother was letting ds jump and bounce on his lap like he always does. Well on the way home she comments on the bouncing and very seriously turns and asks me if I'm aware of what shaken baby syndrome is. Lol! It took so much not to burst out laughing because I love his Nonnie and it was just so ridiculous.
