Postpartum Depression

PPD and a holistic approach

Hello,

I'm a long time lurker on this board. I was diagnosed with PPD when my LO turned 5 months. I was promptly put on Zoloft, but over the month that I was on it, it seemed to make things worse. So my doctor now wants to try Prozac. I'm worried because in my lifetime I have not had sucess with any antidepresents. I brought up doing a more holistic approach, but my doctor kind of snuffed at the idea. I am going to see a therapist, but haven't been able to get into their office due to the holiday week.

One of my friends that was dealing with PPD tried H.B.-W. I'm just looking to see if anyone else has tried this and it worked? Also, I can't seem to find anything about it's effects while breastfeeding. By the time my friend started it she was no longer breastfeeding her son. Any help would be appreciated.

  • I have not tried it but heard it can work great. I am still breastfeeding so haven't tried. Right now I am not using antidepressants just verbal therapy, and I have found writing is huge for me. I seem to be lifting from depression quite a bit, but I still tend to get quite anxious.

    This is going to sound dumb but what is H.B.W? I've never heard of it til now and definitely looking for suggestions :)

  • H.B.-W. is a natural hormone regulator. It is an alternative to antidepressents and is made from natural products. I am going to speak with my therapist about it to see if this is a good option while breastfeeding. If you aren't currently breastfeeding my friend takes it every day and says she can notice the difference without. She swears by it at this point.
  • I've been trying to take the holistic approach this time around as well. With my last pregnancy and baby, I found prozac to work very well, but I do not want to do meds again. I was told to try skull cap and kava kava, but I'm not sure about how that is with breastfeeding. The problem with holistic is that there isn't much research on safety because it doesn't benefit the drug companies! haha

  • I've done a combination of natural remedies and medication.


    I am sure to get 15-30 minutes of sunlight and exercise per day. I take DS on a walk.

    I've cut back on refined sugars and cut back on caffeine. I try to eat more protein.

    I take vitamin D 2000 iu per day.



    Ipractice deep breathing often.

    I also see a therapist once a week which has helped.
