Natural Birth

Intro and a question

Hi, I'm Emily. I'm pregnant with my first and I'm planning to have a homebirth. It has just always made sense to me for whatever reason.

Right now I'm in the process of finding a midwife. I know in the past I've seen that some people have a good list of questions to ask their potential midwife. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

  • These are good places to start:

You can always add your own questions to something like this. Good luck!

In choosing a HBMW, we focused a lot on reasons for transfer and rates of transfer. We also asked about possible problems that can arise and what she would do if one did happen. DH and I needed to know that she would not try to handle anything out of her capability and instead keep our safety first.

We interviewed with a few MWs and found that some focused more on spiritual powers and the goddess of childbirth. They said they would be open to any beliefs, but DH and I just weren't comfortable with that. Instead we found a HBMW who shared our beliefs and she was really came off as more of a friend to us. I think this was key in the success of our homebirth. Having someone that you are comfortable with and agree with is so important.

I agree with all of this. My biggest concern is that my midwives know where their expertise ends and when it is time to consult with a doctor or transfer care. I also wanted to know that they had substantial medical training and that they weren't midwives to prove that doctors aren't needed in birth ever. I also want to be comfortable with my midwife and know that they have the baby and my best interest in mind at all times.

  • Thanks so much for the help. What kinds of things regarding reasons for transfer were you guys looking for? What would you consider to be a reasonable range for transfer rates? This is very helpful. Thanks!  :)
