Cloth Diapering

I have decided to attempt to use cloth diapers.  We have already spent a crapload of money on disposables so I want to give it a try.  Can those of you who CD post some links to the diapers that you use.  I am wanting to do OS diaper covers with prefolds but I am looking for the best deals/quality.  Thanks in advance :)

Re: Cloth Diapering

  • I only use pocket diapers, all-in-ones, and a few fitteds now, but in the beginning I was using GMD prefolds

with Thirsties covers. That's a very common combo for newborns on the bump. GMD diapers are popular, and they're a good quality prefold.

Now with my fitteds I use Blueberry one size covers, which are great.

Good luck! I absolutely love cloth diapering my baby. Check out the Cloth diapering board if you haven't already.

  • I use Thirsties products pretty exclusively - a mix of fitteds (fab fitted duos w/ a hemp insert are our go-to overnight diaper for our heavy wetter) with Duo diaper covers, Duo Diapers and a few Duo All-In-Ones.

Some people don't like the aplix on Thirsties, but ours has been fine.  The double leg gussets (on everything but the AIOs) are amazing at containing leaks and blow-outs.  I've only had one blowout in Thirsties, and that was a week's worth of poop coming out at once with baby on an incline.  NOTHING would have contained that mess.

Heh. I actually took pictures so DH could see what he'd been fortunate enough to miss out on (and the camera was at hand and she stopped fussing and started grinning once that was over!).

One thing worth mentioning - we have a ton of prefolds.  I really thought that they would be our go-to.  I liked the fitteds, and the Duos were mostly for my mom.  Ended up that we really didn't like prefolds.  They were so bulky and didn't seem (to me) to contain things as well.  The fitteds quickly became my favorite and DH LOVES the duo diapers.  We get plenty of use out of the prefolds - but mostly as burpcloths.  So do try a couple of fitteds or pockets - you can get assorted kinds through a diaper trial.

Plenty of people LOVE prefolds and it is certainly easy and economical; they just didn't work for us.  The gold standard for us in terms of comfort/fit/leak-protection are Fab Fitteds (with an insert for overnight) and a cover - but you can buy Thirsties all-in-one's for less than 1 fitted, so they aren't the least expensive option.

  • How big/old is your LO?  We have been using prefolds and covers since birth and they're great, but now that she's getting more squirmy its getting harder to put them on.  Also consider daycare and if anyone else might be changing diapers - prefolds have a learning curve and daycare may not be willing.  I bought a stash of OS pockets for that reason.

That being said, DD is 11lbs and I'm not a huge fan of OS covers.  She's on the smallest rise which makes it REALLY bulky between the legs.  I still prefer our newborn covers right now.  However our Blueberry OS cover is the best of our larger ones.  I also have a Grovia wonder wrap and some Rumparooz covers. I've heard GMD prefolds are awesome but we have Bummis and Osocozy and they work fine.

My suggestion would be to buy used.  You can get some good deals and that way you can get some sized covers to start if your DD is still small.

  • I have a vast collection, we have some FuzziBunz, Blueberry, Flip, And two other kinds that I can't think of the name and too lazy to go look.  I really love all of them except we have a couple that are prefolds and I hate those. We have bought a lot of ours off Babysteals.com when cloth's come up on there. We just bought some more the other day.
  • She's 7 weeks and around 10 pounds.  BTW, I live around Atlanta also :)
  • I love cloth diapering.  Some decent brands with a reasonable price are Kawaii and Alvababy... They are OS pockets.  They seem to be fairly well made and go for $5-$10 each... So you could make a decent stash for about $200.  OS diapers don't really fit until 10 lbs anyway, so this is a good time for you to start! I am using a mixture of prefolds/ AIOs/ pockets now for the newborn stage and after that I will use OS pockets mostly.  A lot of people buy second hand diapers as well on places like diaperswappers.com

In terms of prefolds and covers, I use thirsties and bummis covers mostly and sweet pea prefolds are my favorite that I've tried.  A lot of people swear by the GMD prefolds, but to get them shipped to Canada was too expensive.

The ladies on the cloth diapering board are very knowledgeable and helpful, and there is a useful FAQ section as well.

  • Thank you ladies :)
  • We're using OS pockets (fuzzibunz and Charlie banana). I love the FB, I've never had a blow out, and no leaks since I figured out the proper leg sizing for DS.

the CB are just as functional (and have cuter designs) but the only drawback is they are a lot wider between the legs than the FB and they really splay DS's legs apart. For that reason I'm only using the CB when I run out of clean FB. I'm sure I'll use them a lot more when DS gets a bit bigger and they're not so bulky on him
Nevermind me, I'm too distracted by my mini-carrots to think properly image

  • The CD board on here is great... Check out the FAQ page for lots of great links to info on CD's

  • I use mostly flips and love them.  I've got 7 covers that I got on the cottonbabies seconds sale.  I have 6 stay dry inserts, 6 organic prefolds,  and 12 green mountain diaper prefolds.  I basically alternate 2 covers a day, unless she poops, in which case I put the whole thing in the laundry.

Besides those, I have 2 bumgenius pockets for overnights, one alva baby pocket, one Charlie banana pocket, which is my favorite, and 6 bumgenius elementals.

I do laundry every other day, and have JUST enough diapers to do this.

  • Also, the GMD prefolds I have are the organic medium size, red.  Once washed, these are the same size as the flips organic prefolds, but I've noticed that they stain less and the poo is easier to wash... So I prefer the GMD prefolds.
