3rd Trimester

Anyone get this and if so-- how did you treat (acid vomiting)?

I have never had "heartburn" in my 42 years on earth (not even during my 1st pregnancy) so maybe this is what it normally is, I just don't know.

Anyways-- for the past few days, I have been having a hiccup sensation after I eat and then I need to vomit (just a small amount of what tastes like acid).   It has happened pretty much every time I eat .    I don't eat any trigger foods or before bed, so not sure what else I can do to prevent this?  As an example it happened after eating a fage plain greek yogurt and berries this morning (which was breakfast).   Lunch happened again, after plain salad with grilled chicken and nothing spicy, no fried, nothing really except spinich, lead lettuce, chicken and about 1/4 a tablespoon of balsamic dressing?

It does not hurt in my chest (ie- does not burn) or cause discomfort really other than needing to vomit (which is disgusting and I have to carry a toothbrush around at work).

I have a doctor's appointment on Wednesday where I will ask this, but I wondered if this is something others have gotten in 3rd trimester (I am 32 weeks).

if so-- what did you do for it?

  • That sounds like reflux from heartburn. Try Tums or Zantac. I have found that sometimes Tums work a little better and faster for me.

  • Zantac twice a day if they tums arent working anymore.

  • Exactly what PP said. Tums is quick, I also take Diovol. Zantac is great for working longer (12 hrs).

  • I have this happen as well, not every time I eat though, just after eating foods with a lot of acid.  A friend told me to have some regular coke (not diet, not Pepsi) and that somehow regulates the acid.  Not sure if it works for everyone, but it works for me, if I drink a few sips of coke it goes away.  I would bring it up to your doc though since it happens so frequently and it is not triggered by certain foods.

  • Sounds like acid reflux, and I get it a lot. If the valve from the esophagus to the stomach is weakened/relaxed, which can happen in pregnancy, then the stomach contents can travel back up into the esophagus. I try to avoid large meals which seems to help.

  • I have this problem, it's reflux and it's normal.  My doc said it's more about how your muscles are relaxed and allow the acid from your stomach to lurch up to your throat and less about what you eat.  He told me I could take Pepcid and Tums and that I should not eat within 2 hours of sleeping.  I take Pepcid Complete Chewables in Mint and they seem to do better than tums but you can't just pop them like Tums.  Good luck and feel better!

  • thanks everyone!   I felt so dumb asking, but it is comforting to hear that this seems normal:)   it is confussing as the word heartburn makes it sound like it would feel uncomfortable or burn (not make you vomit).

I will go and buy some tums and zantac as I don't have eihter as I have never had this before and talk to the doctor.

I don't eat big meals and what seems odd is that I could get this after each time I eat (and as I mentioned a small cup of fage greek yogurt and about 15 berries) caused it.   As did a small plain salad with plain grilled chicken on it that I ate for lunch.   I vomited about a tablespoon of acid after both meals and then had to brush my teeth 3 times to get the taste out of my mouth.  It is not too bad-- just really weird!!

  • YES, I HAD IT WHEN I WAS LIKE 2-3 MONTHS PREGNANT. I JUST HAD MY BABY BOY ON JUNE 21ST. ANYWAYS.... MINE WAS MORE MORNING SICKNESS MIXED W/ACID REFLUX AND I USED PEPTOL BISMOL CHEWABLES. IT DOES SOUND LIKE U HAVE ACID REFLUX. IF YOUR EATING SPICY OR SALTY THINGS- THEN CUT DOWN ON THAT TOO. THE PHARMACIST AT CVS TOLD ME WHEN I CALLED ABOUT IT WAS THE ONLY WE CAN TAKE WHILE WERE PREGNANT IS PEPTO BISMOL. BUT U COULD CALL AROUND TO A COUPLE DIFFERENT PHARMACIES IN YOUR AREA AND SEE WHAT THEY SAY.
  • My doc told me I could only take Tums or Mylanta.  Heartburn sucks--I've had it since the very beginning.  I've heard everything--drink some apple cider vinegar, eat watermelon, drink lots of water, sleep sitting up, etc.  None of them work.  Invest in a large bottle of Tums and take 2 three times a day.  Big Smile

  • Tums were my best friend when I was pregnant. I tried to take only one a day but sometimes it was just so bad. Milk helped too a little. I got it from eating anything really. My doctor told me Tums worked the best.
  • I used to have this when I was asleep which sucked.  I would wake up with a mouth full of reflux.  yuck.

My doctor told me to take Pepcid ac, and it worked really well.  I just took it before going to bed.  If you're getting this after meals, maybe you may want to take the pill before you eat.

Pepcid and zantac work to keep reflux from forming.  Tums neutralizes existing acid.  So if you're preventing, do Pepcid, if you're already experiencing it, chew a couple of tums.

Now that my baby has dropped, I haven't had any issues with reflux.  So that's a plus.

    Good luck.

  • In my PG with DS, I threw up because of acid from weeks 7 to 37, ugh! This PG I know better...first I try a natural remedy: papaya enzyme, 1/4t baking soda, or 1T apple cider vinegar mixed with water. If I don't feel better in 30-60 min, I take a Zantac 150 up to twice a day. Personally, I would avoid Tums, and I say this as a former Tums junkie. They contain artificial color and flavor plus aluminum and the calcium in them isn't always processed appropriately by the body. Papaya enzyme tablets are a harmless alternative.
  • milk helps me tremendously. high in calcium and a base.

This.   EVERYTHING gives me heartburn these days.   Water, tea, juice...the only things that do not give me heartburn and/or make heartburn go away for me is a coke or a glass of milk.    I also have a friend who swears by pickles, vinegar, or sour candy for heartburn.

  • I had the same thing and was throwing up every night. I got a prescription for Protonix which is a class b drug, and it worked starting the very first night. Tums zantac etc did NOT do it for me.

  • Yup, I was projectile vomiting every night.  I went through(in this order) tums, rolaids, pepcid, zantac then prilosec.  Prilosec OTC was the only thing that worked for me.
