45 minute naps and lots of fussing

Any other may moms dealing with this?  My daughter is 2 months old and for the past week and a half, her naps have only been 45 minutes.  My sweet, happy baby has turned into a sad, crying, tired one for most of her day.

Prior, she was awake for 1.5 and slept for 1.5, like clockwork.   (she put herself on the EASY routine long before i had even read the baby whisperer) Now she is awake for 1.5, sleeps for 45, and then fusses and yawns for 45 minutes more.

Tell me this is just a phase!  Is anyone else having trouble with napping more than one sleep cycle during the day around the two month mark?  Any advice would be helpful.  My mouth cannot "shush" any longer!!!

(thankfully, she doesn't have any problem at all sleeping more than one sleep cycle during the night)

Edit: currently we do shush and pat when she wakes up.  If it looks like she's drifting back to sleep after 10 minutes, we attempt to leave, but this fails.  If she is out of control crying, we do pick her up and attempt to put her down again, which TOTALLY fails.

  • Yes!!! Connor is a couple weeks younger than your LO but this is what he has started.  He is barely awake andhpy anymore!!  It's driving me insane... I hope it's just a phase... That's what I keep telling myself anyway!

  • Right there with you! LO has more days like this than not. I keep hearing how the first three months are the hardest. Last night he decided to just snack on his bottles (normally eats a full bottle then back to bed for 3-4 hours). DH said he is eating very little this morning too....along with being overtired...does not make for a happy baby :(

  • I am jealous that your LO naps that long on her own!  DD will only catnap for 15-25 minutes if I put her down during the day.  She'll nap for an hour to 90 minutes if I'm holding her or wearing her in the sling.  I've tried everything to get her to nap in bed, her swing, bouncy seat, car seat ..... nothing works during the day.  At least she's still sleeping pretty well at night, so I try to not stress about the naps. I have definitely noticed the past week she is fighting sleep more and has to be rocked.  Hoping that gets better with time too.

Oh my... 15 to 25 minutes!  I really shouldn't be complaining then.  It's good to hear from you ladies to reassure me that my daughter isn't the only one having crazy nap patterns...

  • Gavin is a terrible napper.  He has been for some time; he's 2mo now.  His routine is nurses, awake and wanting to play until about 30ish mins before time to nurse again.  Sleeps for those 30ish mins and then is awake to nurse.  He thankfully only gets fussy in the evening about 9-10. Sometimes he will nap longer when he is soo tired he can't fight it anymore.  I have just learned to go with it.  When he's awake he is usually contented to be in his swing or on the floor for his tummy time that I can get things done.  When he is fussy, daddy is a big help too.  I hope things settle down for you.

  • My daughter's napping routine was turned upside down at 7 weeks. She went from having 1-3 hour naps at fairly predictable timer per day, to only sleeping 20 minutes at a time, and only in my lap.

She's 9 weeks now and her naps have gotten longer again, but it's still nearly impossible to put her down.

  • I have gone to swaddling for naps.  I used to get maybe 15 minutes out of her, but now I swaddle and do not let her go more than 2 hours without putting her down otherwise she really fights sleep and gets pretty crabby at night.  Doing those things I usually get naps that are 45min to 2 hours.

  • I was having this prob, then went to double swaddling, or as I call it, the cheap miracle blanket, and now get 1.5-2 hour naps and 6-7 hours a night (followed by 3 hour stretches the rest of the night).

  • Try getting outside if you can, Lucas naps for three to four hours of we're outside in the fresh air.  If we stay in all day he doesn't nap nearly as well.

This is a great idea!  I will try taking her out later today.
