Tell me about your stink issues and what you've tried.  I had some stink in my BGs and got rid of it.  Maybe I can help.  I don't want you to give up CDing!

Re: Hav=Faith

  • Have you tried bleach? BG's are supposed to be bleached with chlorine bleach monthly with (1/4 of a cup).

If you have done that, here is my next suggestion (and even if you have bleached, you should try this because it is awesome).

Stop using RNG and other CD detergent.   I tried them all.  POWDERED TIDE is the best!

Buy some RLR from here. Once it arrives, fill your washer with hot hot hot water (hottest you can get without it being boiling.  Put in diapers and RLR.  Let it agitate enough to mix and then turn off the washer and let diapers soak overnight.  After you let them soak overnight, start the washer again and let it finish the cycle.  Do another wash and let it rinse (no detergent in this load, just let it run with clean water).  (This whole process should be done on clean diapers).

Seriously, you will not believe how great your diapers look and smell! Use this monthly(ish) to keep your diapers from getting funktastic.

I think your old school machine is probably better because it has more water.  I would try to wash every 3 days max.

This is our wash routine.  Not sure it is helpful to you, but H worked hard to perfect it.  LOL!  So, I'll share.

Cold water rinse.  Wash with Tide (almost to line 3), 1/2 cup of baking soda (measure it so you use enough) and 1 cup of vinegar in the softener dispenser.  Wash on hot with an extra rinse.  Sometimes if the ammonia smell is strong, H throws baking soad in the rinse to neutralize the ammonia smell, but not usually.

Okay, just ordered the RLR. Until then, do you think it's okay to bleach with each load? I was just afraid to hurt the diapers so I have bleached in the past but it's not very frequently.

And THANKS so much for the suggestion, I'm book marking it now so I can come back and reread until I have it all memorized. Thanks again.

I would.  Barnyard is the WORST.  1/4 of a cup of bleach really isn't that much with a full load of water.

  • Can I butt in?

Are there any liquid detergents that are as good as the powdered Tide?  We have a septic and can't use powdered detergents.  Should I buy it and dissolve it in water to "make" liquid?  Everyone says how great the powdered Tide is!  We are using Planet brand liquid but it's not HE and I am having a hard time figuring out how much is a good amount for my HE washer.

I also don't know how to override the washer to put more water in.  I almost wish we'd bought a low-efficiency washer!  Ha!  (Defeating purpose...........)

  • I guess it's supposed to clog them?  We had our house inspection when we moved into our new house and the inspector was wicked nice and told us to never use powdered detergent.  I googled it and it was legit.  I don't really want to mess up our septic system just b/c I want to use Tide like everyone else, haha.

I would try it. I know it's a "legit" theory but the only thing I know is septics. Everyone and there Grandma uses powdered items around here without issue. I'm sure if you dumped buckets of it down the drain it'd be an issue, but in normal use dissolved in water I don't see how this is a problem.

Hey JLSimon56 I use the Dropps pacs exclusively for my diapers. I have spent an embarrassing amount of money on my stash so I researched the heck out of detergents for fear of ruining my diapers... Dropps is liquid pacs, a little bit pricey, but I have (knock on wood) never had barnyard stink or ammonia issues.

  • We used Tide before with a toploader and they were always stinky. I think that I wasn't using enough detergent. I liked it alright, but got a sample pack of the Bumgenius detergent and I've been sold on it ever since. I use about 3 scoops of it (they recommend one for an HE machine and two for a regular top loader, when I would use two, they didn't smell as clean) and I haven't had any issues. I've found that detergent to be the best for us. You may try out a sample pack if all else fails. I'm not hating on Tide, though! It just wasn't for us because I was having to use a lot of it with a couple extra rinses for the stink to go away.

Did you use liquid tide?  If so, that was probably the issue.  It has added stuff to keep it emulsified.

No, it was the powdered. We have really hard water too, so that was also an issue.

I just knew you were going to scream at me... every time I get "paged" I feel like I did in school getting called to the principal's office...

Anyways, It's the bad barn yard stink.... it's awful. I normally do 2 cold rinses, wash on hot with Tide or Rocking Green (have tried Charlies too)  and usually let them soak at least 4-5 hours in the detergent. Then do two more cold rinses... and they still come out of the dryer stinking.

The only way I can get them to stop stinking is to let them soak in bleach, and then after that, the next time I do a normal wash they still come out stinking.

This last time I went a little nuts... I did two hot rinses, soaked in hot water with Tide, Rocking Green, and funk Rock all night long, then did another hot wash with just Tide and 2 more rinses... I was determined they wouldn't stink. They came out smelling great! BUT... I bet when I wash them today with a  normal routine they'll still stink b/c that's been our routine.

I have been washing them in our older top loader b/c it's so much easier (and upstairs) but I wonder if I would have better luck washing them in the front loader? We have one downstairs that I haven't tried but am willing to. I just don't want her to stink, ya know? I don't want to stop CD'ing at all, so any suggestions welcome. I do think that maybe I'm waiting too long between washing? 3-4 days is average, she is such a light 'peeler' that we don't really go through that many a day, and we sometimes use disposables when we're out and about... think that may be it?

Is the barn-yard stink fromt the pocket shells or the inserts?  Have you tried washing the shells and inserts seperately to isolate the smell to maybe just the inserts?

I ask, because I have heard that the regular BG MF inserts have to be replaced sometimes because they get a stink that just never goes away.  I know you can buy packs of more MF inserts, there are 6 in a pack I think for just $15.  If the stink is just in the insert, than it would be much cheaper, IMO,  to replace the inserts than to go for sposies.
