So I finally got serious about sleep training a few weeks ago. He will put himself to sleep, but he always screams when I walk out of the room and cries to sleep. It's so heartbreaking. You usually hear of the crying only lasting a certain amount of nights, but with him, he ALWAYS cries EVERY night. I don't know if it's b/c I waited so long to sleep train, or if it's just his personality.
Anyone else experience this?
I try to do a nice relaxing routing. I give him his bottle with the light on so he won't fall asleep on the bottle. I then stand up and we say good night to the little animal decals, and we might sway to the music in the dark for a minute, etc.
Any suggestions?
Re: Anyone else's LO cry every night before bed?
Sorta. My LO cries for a minute or two after I leave but then he settles down. If it goes for more than 5 mins I go in and comfort him and try to get him to relax by stroking his back.
It also depends on what mood he is in. Yesterday I think he was tired from traveling and couldn't settle down so he cried for longer and needed more help relaxing.
But this is the peak of separation anxiety I think. So he will cry when you leave. What works best is if I pass him off to hubby kiss LO goodnight and then have hubby read a book or two and put him to sleep. He is a lot less upset if hubby leaves him alone in bed than if I do.
How long does he cry for?
My LO has done this since birth, but I leave her be. She usually settles by minute 5 and is out like a light by minute 10. If it's been 15 minutes and still no dice, I go get her and try something else (which is rare).
It apparently is her way of winding down or something.
DD still fusses most of the time but it is only for a minute or two. I think it is her way of protesting going to bed, but it never lasts long. How tired is LO when you put them to bed? I have noticed that if DD is really tired she settles a lot quicker.

Most nights we have at least a little fussing before he falls asleep. Some nights it's more than others.
More often than not I let him CIO. If the crying goes on for 30 minutes or becomes hysterical, I go back in, check for poop and if there is none, soothe him best I can and put him back down. That usually does the trick.
I do know his cries, so I know whether he needs to be addressed or whether or not he's just fussing/whining.
Yes, sometimes. She is winding down..
