TTC after 35

Sleep studies - no fun!

So they think I might have sleep apnea since pretty much everyone on my Dad's side of the family has it, they think my Mom has it, and I have a tone of other risk factors that suggest I have it too - most concerning is my episodes of high BP.  And since I need to keep my BP under control if I get KU I figured I would bite the bullit & see the sleep doctor.

So I had my sleep study on Saturday & it was not fun!  I don't know why they call it a "sleep" study because I think I got the worst night's sleep ever.  Just when I would manage to fall asleep they would wake me because one of the 5 million wires they had taped to me wasn't working right or they needed me to roll over into a different position.  Now I have to wait up to two weeks for the results - grrrrr.

At least my deductable is all paid up so we should be good to go for any TTC testing this year.

Me 39 & suspected PCOS, DH 42. Went off BCP when we got married in 11/11, seriously TTC since 3/12.  Six cycles of clomid = BFNs.  Suspected endometriosis & HSG showed both tubes blocked.  Sept 2013 IVF 5D transfer of two perfect embryos = BFN.  Started acupuncture and taking time off to drop some pounds & get healthier before FET in April 2014.

This is why I won't do one. Well, that and I don't sleep well with pajamas on-- I can't stand clothing getting all twisted around me-- and I would clearly NOT sleep naked in front of these people.

I was told I should get a sleep study because I was so exhausted for a while. Thanks, but no thanks! I talk in my sleep but I don't have apnea, as my mom or any of my boyfriends or MH would have noticed!

Do you take anything for your high BP? Do you like garlic? Garlic is good for high BP, as is cinnamon (which is also good for glucose/insulin issues, cholesterol, and triglycerides). You can get both in capsule form if you don't want to eat a ton the traditional way...

This is me! I started having insomnia after our second loss in Feb. I've been taking Ambien, which works well, but I hate being on a sleep aid. Good luck! No sleep/bad sleep is AWFUL!

  • No my doctor hasn't put me on anything yet becasue it's not consistently high and he wants me to try to lose weight first....yada, yada, yada.  Thanks for the tip on the garlic & cinnamon caps.  I eat a fair amount of both but the caps couldn't hurt.

I went ahead with the study because my DH tells me that I snore, grind my teeth, and most recently he's heard me gasping so think the odds are pretty good that I have a cpap machine in my future.  But my Dad's been using one for years now and has never had so much energy.  And that's my main complaint - I'm always exhausted & alwasy have been.  Really hoping that this helps but my fear is that it will be like every other medical test I've ever had - inconclusive.

  • I have a sneaking suspicion that you are right about the apnea. I don't know how people wear those CPAPs though-- I can't stand having anything on my face like that.

I hope they find something though-- would you insurance cover a CPAP machine if the sleep study folks don't give a definitive diagnosis? I would think it might be worth the effort to try and see if it improves things...Too bad you can't borrow your dads for a night or two, but it sounds like he really needs one!

Hang in there-- maybe it will all work out just right!

  • Well the technician did say at one point that the study was going well and he was already finding some "interesting things" so hopefully that means they can give me an actual diagnosis. At this point if it helps me feel better & helps get me KU sooner I would be willing to look like Darth Vader while I sleep :-)

  • MH had several sleep studies done over the course of 10 yrs. Yep they stink. When I first started dating him and he finally spent the night he brings out this contraption and I'm like...WTH is that? He told me he needed to sleep with it on and I tried my hardest not to laugh!

Anyhow without it he would be miserable. He sometimes sleeps down in the guest bedroom because there are times the noise coming out of it drives me crazy!! Oh and he has narcolepsy added in the mix too! He's a mess :)

    ME:46 MH:44 DE IVF 2014
Met with RE 4/11. 2 IUI's BFN. DE best option. Switched clinics to do "shared" program. Had to retake all tests and a mamm that put me behind and then on a DE waiting list for 12 months. Picked a donor!! (10/13/13) Got matched. Estimated transfer in December. After 2.5 years of patiently waiting I will finally cycle....can hardly believe it. DE cycle got cancelled. One of her tests came back positive.  Waiting for another donor. Donor picked!! (1/18/14)

    DE IVF #1 (4/26) BFN  DE FET #1 (6/4) BFP! Beta 1=339 Beta 2=852 Beta 3=9957 EDD 2/22/15!!

  • Luckily my DH could probably sleep through a train running through the bedroom and maybe the cpap machine noise will drown out his snoring Wink

I'll keep ya'll posted on the study results.

  • I know it's too late now, but they do have at home sleep studies. I did one because I can't sleep if I'm not at home, so it was useless to send me to a sleep center because all I did was lay there.
