January 2012 Moms

the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth

even though DD stopped eating at night over 2 months ago, she still wakes up 2-8 times a night... there has been ONE night in her entire tiny life that she has slept a solid 8 hour stretch. I'm usually thanking the lord for 4.

Anyways, please tell the truth since i'm not here to judge, just to know i'm not alone... how many nights has your lo ACTUALLY slept all the way through the night, with no intervention of any kind (let's say sttn is 8 hours... more is better, but we'll go with that for now ;)

  • Never, and LO will be six months old next week.  I usually do a dream feed around 10pm and she sleeps until around 4:30 or 5am.  I've been thinking about dropping the 10pm feeding, but I'm too chicken that it will mess everything up.

  • imageMrsMooney:

She slept for at least 8 hours through the night from the time she was 6 weeks old to the time she was four months. Every night. Since the time she turned four months she wakes up three times every night. She goes to bed at 8 and wakes up at midnight, 3am and 6am and is up for the day at 7:30am. (approximately those times) I would love to go back to her sttn!! My four month wakeful is getting a little excessive. Haha.

Do you have a strict bedtime routine? Are you swaddling?

Yes, we're still swaddling... I've tried not to, but it hasn't worked so far. she will fall asleep in her car seat or when i'm holding her without the swaddle, but in her bed... nope.

as for bedtime, the routine is a routine, but not strict. we do bath (i would say 6 of 7 nights) and then one some or all of the following, books, songs, little bit of a video, rocking in chair and I always give her a last feeding... even if she only ate like 2 hours ago just to top her off. She goes down well, but is so wakeful.

currently, when she wakes I go in, put the paci back in and leave. usually she goes back to sleep. however, sometimes (like every other night or so) she will spit it out and keep fussing. When she does that I've begun letting her cry for 5 minutes before I go back and put the paci back in... and usually that's all it takes. I've thought about taking the paci away completely, but i'm so afraid it's going to backfire... like that maybe that's not the real reason she is wakeful and that she still possibly needs it... idk.

I used to do the dream feeding at 10 too! I was sooooo afraid to drop it but I moved it to like 9 and then one night my husband said why don't you just see what happens if you don't feed her again and it worked... keeping in mind that her wakefulness has been consistent with and without that feeding... so "works" is relative i guess ;) I betcha she'll keep sleeping til 430-5 if you drop it ;)

  • Never and he will be 6 months next week. There are times he will get up once and then get up in the morning between 5-6am. There are nights he will wake up multiple times. :(  His best stretch has been six hours and he has only done that twice.

I tried a dream feed and he just slumped over and went to sleep.

  • Braeden STTN for about 2-3 weeks when he was about 3 months old and then the 4 month wakeful period hit.  Now he is up every 3-4 hours.  This past week we transitioned him to the crib (on top of a cold) so he has been up every 2-3 hours.

DS has been STTN since...maybe 6 to 8 weeks (or so) except for the 4 month wakeful period or when he's been sick or teething.  There was a week where he was congested and had a difficult time sleeping so DH and I got hardly any sleep that week.

  • Since he was 8 weeks old, with no exception.. I know I am extremely lucky. He has been giving us a tough time going down to sleep in this past week, though.

  • Never. I got 6 hours straight one time and that was it. We usually have to go in a few times to replace the pacifier, flip him from tummy to back (he gets stuck and can't remember how to get back over), or feed him. Sometimes his diaper will leak and then he's wet and I have to put different pjs on him. That doesn't happen a lot, but occasionally. I often wonder if he will ever STTN.

  • He's never STTN.  The longest he's ever given me is 5 hours.  I'm hoping he'll start soon now that he's in the crib.  Our routine consists of feeding some solids for dinner, bathtime (every other night), PJs, story, nursing, bed.  He'll fuss anywhere between 5 min and an hour before going down.  I won't feed him unless at least 2 hours has passed since his last feeding.

Sounds like you have a good routine each night, which I know helped DD (but who am I to say anything? She wakes up all the time now. Hahaha) We just stopped swaddling this week and oddly enough, even though she has been swaddled every day since she was born, she has been doing well and sleeping just as good as she did without it.

I hope we are both getting some better sleep soon!

thanks, you too! it seems like some babies must just be more wakeful than others... oh well, hopefully by kindergarten! LOL

it's hard when they're sick :( when DD was sick I ended up sleeping in a chair with her because laying was hard for her to breathe... oddly, she slept really well there... me, not so much ;)

DS has been STTN since 12 (ish?) weeks.  At that point it was at 8 hours.  Now he sleeps from 6:30 pm to 6:00 am.

I read Healthy Sleep Habits Happy Child and it was super helpful for us.  DS was always somewhat of a self-soother so we'd let him fuss a bit.  I still rock him until he's somewhat drowsy then put him down when he's sleepy but still awake.  He rolls all over the crib and sleeps in any and all positions but I will not go in there (unless he's in a full on meltdown which has never actually happened) before 5:45 am.  I do stalk the video monitor when he's fussing just to see if everything is ok.

His naps are total crap, but I'll deal with it as long as he keeps sleeping at night!

i am rethinking the amount that i tend to her when she wakes... i think i am feeding the bad habit... i think i'm headed in the "not going in unless a full-on meltdown guideline...

  • The truth is, my DD has NEVER slept solid 8hrs and certainly not more without waking up. The longest she's slept was about 7 hrs and only very few times.

Otherwise she's up at least every two hours. Sometimes it's an easy fix of just sticking the paci back in and she's back asleep intantly for another 1-2 hours or its a one hour struggle to get her back to sleep just so she can sleep for another 2 hrs and then we have to do it all over again.

she's had one good stretch of about a month (when she was a little over 3 months) where she'd sleep from about 10 pm - 4am, would eat and then fall back asleep for another 3-4 hours. This was AMAZING. But only lasted that long... And during this time, there were still at least 2 times I'd have to get up to giver her the paci back but I'm not even counting that...

I'm glad you posted this because this morning I was about to cry. The past two weeks or so DD has been sleeping HORRIBLY and I'm about to lose my mind.... I'm basically up all night...

Not that I'm happy that you are going through a rough time as well but it is comforting to know that I'm not alone either....

During the nights when I started weaning him from the wakings, I would be total robo-mommy.  I would go in, soothe him for just a bit (maybe 1-2 mins total), put in his paci, and then leave.  No playing, no talking, no snuggles (which was hard) so that he knew that the middle of the night was not playtime.  Also, I would set a timer (the Itzbeen Baby Timer was attached to me at all times in the beginning) and I would let him fuss for 5 minutes before going in.  5 minutes of fussing felt like 5 hours to me, but he would usually calm himself down.  This was my routine in the beginning of the sleep training (around 4 months).  Now it was like I said originally... nothing short of full meltdown.

I seriously read HSHHC cover to cover twice and then felt more confident about the sleep training.  When they are this little it gets better so so quickly so it's not like you'll be dealing with this for weeks and weeks.

I've been doing the 5 minute thing for awhile and it hasn't seemed to make a difference... like she cries, wait 5 mins go in calm down, wait 5 min... she goes back to sleep usually the 2nd round but the waking is still as frequent. BUT as per what you said about not going in short of a meltdown, I switched things up a bit and things went really well! first off, i got her to go down on her tummy, first time ever. she was out of the swaddle (also a first since 1 month) and no paci. she went down fine but woke an hour and a half in, I calmed her but she kept crying. full on meltdown ensued, but i waited the 5 minutes, went in for 1, waited again. she passed out, probably from exhaustion LOL anyways, after that, she woke every hour all night long. however, I didn't go in ONCE. She would wake and fuss fuss, for less than 2 minutes each time and go back to sleep. i am so happy i could cry right now lol

i know EXACTLY what you mean about knowing you're not alone. it is hard!!! In some ways, i feel like it's harder than getting up to feed all night as a newborn. but i keep telling myself that it WILL get better... hopefully before kindergarten... LOL
