Heat!

How are you keeping your LOs sane? Usually when Varghese gets cranky we sit outside on the grass and he is distracted from his troubles. Now the heat index is around 110 I can't stand even looking out of the window and Varghese is getting cabin fever.

HELP!

Re: Heat!

  • I took Aidan and Dylan to a water park yesterday. Dylan enjoyed the wave pool and lazy river and we still got to be outside but didn't die from the heat.

  • Ditto PP on the water play.  We have this:

It's a perfect size for the girls.  I put my chair right up against the side and put my feet in the pool while they play.

However, if it's 100* with a heat index of 115*, like today, we do something indoors but out of the house.  It might just be walking around the mall or Target, but we get out of the house.

Some of my city's attractions have free days and we go to all of them - two museums, a waterpark, etc.  Find out when you can get free or discounted admission to places near you.

  • Lena absolutely HATES the heat. She cannot tolerate it. So really, we end up staying inside, unless we use my parents' pool.  We did run some errands today, which was a bit of a change of scenery. I know where I live, we don't really have many options for stuff to do, so on days like these, I feel your pain!

I let her climb the stairs and explore the guest room. We're rarely in there, so she gets a kick out of it. This, however, requires a two story home and unused room...

  • It doesn't phase B. He is constantly escaping out the doggie door to go play outside! For my sanity we try to go to the public pool.

I used to take him for walks in the late afternoon to get out of the house. Now we do early morning walks (so I can get some exercise) and I don't want to go outside while there is an excessive heat warning.

Is it safe to be outside but in a pool during an excessive heat warning?

We have been trying to keep him entertained in the house, because it is even too hot to put him in his kiddie pool (well especially for me to stand out there with him since I won't fit lol). It's going to be a long summer!!

  • My LO loves the heat.  She is currently napping in a fleece sleepsack.  Last night, she wore fleece footy PJs.  I was in my bed, sweating in my tank top.  She's been like this since she was born.  She screamed and screamed when we first brought her home.  The pedi said - turn off your AC.  So we did, and she stopped screaming.  WEIRD CHILD.

We got a sandbox and I put 1" of water in it and she sits in there.

If your child is wearing sunscreen, kept comfortable with fans, shade, or breaks from the heat, and kept hydrated then, yes. It is safe. But little ones don't tolerate the heat as well as we do. If shade and hydration aren't enough to keep you comfortable out there, take your LO inside.
