First Ultrasound

Thought I'd ask this of locals.  When did you have your first ultrasound?  I'm only 7 weeks and was wondering what the local communities do around here.  I've heard of them being as early as 6 weeks and as late as 20.  I was hoping that I might get an early one.  Thanks.

Re: First Ultrasound

  • I'm seeing Trihealth Nurse Midwives and delivering at Good Sam, and my first (and only) u/s was at 21 weeks. I don't think they usually do more than that unless there's reason to.

  • Most practices only do the 20 week anatomy scan (which actually is done anywhere between 18-22wks). Generally the only reason to do an ultrasound earlier in the pregnancy is for dating purposes (if you arent sure of the date of your last period) or if there is any complication such as excessive bleeding (check length of cervix and placental location) or symptoms that don't align with how far along you should be. Some people will also get an earlier ultrasound if they opt to do additional testing (I think the quad screen might come with an ultrasound, not sure since we always opt out of all the early tests). Keep in mind that insurance often does not want to cover anything other than the 20 week anatomy scan so even if your provider will do an ultrasound you might want to call your insurance company first to find out about coverage. HTH!

    Ditto this exactly.

With DS, I only got an u/s at 20 weeks.  I paid and got a 3d one around 28 weeks, but that was purely for entertainment purposes and not diagnostic.

With DD, I had had my IUD removed in April, got pregnant in late June/July, and hadn't really had much of a cycle so my dates were off.  I got one when my OB was pretty sure I'd be between 7-9 weeks for dating purposes.

When I m/c'd in 2007, I did have an u/s done to try and diagnose why I was bleeding so much.  I should have been 10ish weeks along, so they wanted to see what was happening.

You can get an u/s with the genetic testing, but since I didn't do this with either pregnancy, I'm not sure when this would be.

The quad screen doesn't, but the NT scan does, and that's around 12 weeks. Forgot to mention that, my apologies!

  • Yup, as PP said, my practice also only does the anatomy scan.  I had one early in my pregnancy though because the doctor couldn't hear the heart beat and wanted to make sure everything was ok.  Turns out, I was growing a swimmer.

  • My OB standard is 20 weeks with the option of a NT scan at 12 weeks.

We worked with a RE so I had an ultrasound at 6 and 8 weeks before being released to an OB at 10 weeks. I opted to do the NT scan bc insurance covers it so I will have that one tomorrow.

I had an ultrasound at my first appointment which was at 9 weeks.  The next ultrasound was at 22 weeks.  My next will be at 32 weeks.
  • Thanks ladies.  They actually did a vaginal ultrasound because the doctor was concerned.  That was Tuesday.  Nothing showed up on the ultrasound.

So, I went back in today (Thursday).  My beta levels were very low Tuesday and are even lower today.

Turns out, I had a chemical pregnancy.  The doc said that is when your body produces pregnancy hormone but there never is a baby.  Unfortunately, I was never pregnant.  However, (and I find this odd), they do count it as a miscarriage.

So sorry to hear that!  ::hugs::

  • Most do the ultrasound at 20 weeks. Now I am high risk so I got mine early and frequent. If you have not risk factors the expect the 20 weeks for your first US. Good luck and congrats...

  • Thanks Gilene2011.  I hope we can try again in a couple of months.  The doctor told us to wait for 2 months.  I hope hubby wants to try, though.  He was all for the "whatever happens happens" until I got pregnant, then he seemed a little scared, lol.  We shall see what the future holds.

     Thanks again!

  • I go to Group Health Associates and they did an ultrasound at 7 weeks and again at 20 weeks. Unless you have a high risk pregnancy, you'll only get 1-2 ultrasounds. If you want ultrasounds earlier or at other times you could always try Becoming Mom in Mason.

At 7 weeks, you can't see much. All we saw was the yolk sac and they let us know what her heart rate was. You can see a lot more later on. I had an extra ultrasound around 13 weeks during testing and you can actually see a person!

  • Seven Hills Women's Center will make you wait until confirmation of pregnancy which was at least 8 weeks from my last, first day of my period. However they did if there was history of complications or miscarriages which leads me to believe I would have been scheduled sooner.
