Toddler Beds

Just out of curiousity, what is the general timeframe to switch to a toddler bed?

Re: Toddler Beds

  • I think when the learn how to climb out, it's time to do it. Just moved my 2.5 year old last month when she came running upstairs and gave me a heart attack during nap time. I know it's just my opinion, but if they are happy in their crib just keep them. It's the safest place.

This is what we will be doing also. We might not even use a toddler bed. If LO can stay in her crib long enough, then we will switch to a big girl bed around 2.5 to 3 years and use guard rails.

  • We moved DS1 into a toddler bed at 15 months because we were expecting DS2 in 5 months and decided we'd rather buy a toddler bed and replace our drop side crib (modified of course but it was a hand me down) then buy two cribs that one boy was going to grow out of sooner.  DS1 took to it right away.  DS2 could probably switch too because he is climbing in and out of the toddler bed without problems but we won't switch him until we move DS1 to a twin bed...or get pregnant again....which ever comes first (and for the record the twin bed is planned to come sooner...lol).

  • We're planning to move DD to a twin bed on the floor shortly after the new year when we're ready to move the new baby out of our room. So she'd be about 20 months or so.

  • DD is already in a toddler bed and is doing great. Our crib broke and we decided not to replace it.
  • DS hasn't slept in his crib since November or so.  He would cry and cry and so we started co-sleeping.  We're getting ready to move, but after that we are planning to sidecar the crib and slowly move him into his own space.  We  taught him "feet first" and he has no problem getting off of our king bed (waist high) with bed rails if he wants down without help.  (No, I do not leave him alone in bed - except for me to pee in the middle of the night!)

Once he is ok in his own space, we will keep him in the toddler bed.

  • My older son never climbed out of his crib, so he didn't move to a regular bed (we just went straight to a full size bed, not a toddler bed) until he was a little over 3 years old.  He would have still been content in the crib I think, but we needed it at that time for Liam's arrival :)

we moved DS from crib to twin bed with rails at 2.5 years. we skipped the toddler bed thing all together. one less thing to transition from and he was plenty big for a bed.

  • I know my sister moved my nephew to a twin bed at about 2 and a half, because my niece needed the crib.

  • I've also heard that potty training is a factor in this decision. If your LO is potty trained he/she needs to be able to get out of bed and go to the bathroom in the middle of the night, if necessary.

Unless you're my kid, who is scared to get out of bed and go to the bathroom by himself in the middle of the night and just calls for us every time, even though I tell him he can just go!! :)
