How Much Tummy Time?

Sam is really struggling with tummy time.  Whenever I put him on his belly he just screams and screams.  I've tried toys, books, staying down on the floor with him; nothing works.  He does ok if he is on my chest, but I don't feel like he is getting enough of the developmental exercises he needs there.

How much time does your LO spend on his/her tummy every day?  How do you keep him/her happy?

Re: How Much Tummy Time?

  • Connor has always seemed to enjoy tummy time...in fact he likes everything better on his tummy!  We have tummy time for about 10 mins three times day.  Sometimes it's the only way I can get him to stop screaming.

  • my daughter hated it in the beginning...but i realized I was putting her down for tummy time when she was tired (or over tired) and wanted nothing to do with it (and screamed bloody murder)...then once I figured her out a bit, I would do tummy time soon after she ate (and slept). Made a world of difference.  She loves being on her belly and usually ends up falling asleep during tummy time (that's how much she likes it now)..lol  my first daughter hated it no matter what we did...and she survived! Doing it on your chest is just as good, if you can't do it on the floor...It's still allowing her to lift her head and use and strengthen those neck muscles.

  • Ava hates it ro. She will only do it on my chest. Im ok with it for now. She does what i call the mermaid and does pushups :)and if i put my hands at her feet she pushes off them alot. Ao i will take it. I do put her on the mat though a few times a day for a couple min ao she knows she has thT option also :)
  • my girl is not a fan so it's random and only for a short time each day.

  • Henry hates tummy time, so it's several times through out the day for a few minutes. Don't force a baby to do tummy time, or they associate it with negativity. Just build up to 20-30 minutes a day. We started at 2 minutes 3x a day to5 minutes 3x a day. Some days are better than others.

Tummy time on your chest also counts, so keep that in mind.

We do tummy time on our chests a lot.  She loves to be up there and look around and holds her head up really well.  She leans way back to look at our faces.  I started putting her on her play mat this weekend and she is getting used to it.  We lasted 10 minutes this AM so I am calling that a success.

  • I've found that E likes tummy time better if she's on an incline... I sit cross legged and put her chest on my knee. She will hold her head up and look around for about 10 minutes this way. If it put her on the floor she gets frustrated and won't lift her head
  • DD doesn't seem very fond of tummy time either.  What seems to work, thus far, is my placing her on her boppy, face down and chest against the circular end.  I put an iPad in front of her with infant stimulation playing and she seemed content and entertained for a bit.

  • My LO hates tummy time, but its gotten a bit better this past week. I also am using the boppy now, and he seems to tolerate that better. I just try and keep him in different positions and work his neck different ways.
  • DD hates it too, which I brought up at the pedi's office this morning and she said they all do at first. She recommended at least 30 minutes a day (broken up over a few different sessions)
  • Thanks ladies!  This makes me feel a lot better.  We can usually get a couple minutes at a time, and I'm glad time on my chest counts - he camps out there for a large chunk of the day.  His neck is pretty strong and he can hold his head up for quite a long time, but I've been worried that he's not going to figure out how to roll over quickly enough.  I'm not quite as worried anymore.  Smile

  • What others have said about time on your chest, but also, we burp her sitting up holding her face, and this has really helped her neck, believe it or not.  Shes constantly trying to lift her head off of our fingers and sit up herself. Just be careful and always keep holding on even if theyre in control, so if hes got to rest he can!

  • Dr. recommended at least 15 min. a day if possible.  Alex is starting to get used to it.  We use his boppy too, or the smaller version that sits under his arms and came with his playmat.  Per his doc the longest to let him cry is about 2 min right now.  We shoot for 5 min. every time he does it, and if he's ok and not crying, we go for longer.  If he starts crying, I time out about 2 min, and pick him up.   He seems to like having something in front of him to look at, even if it's just me laying in front of him and making faces and noises.

Also agree w/ PP about burping sitting up. We've done that w/ LO since the beginning, and he's got great neck control from it.
