BF moms: has your DC ever overeaten?

DD went for a couple good long stretches between feedings last night (she cluster fed yesterday evening and then went between 3-4 hours during the night) and then woke up this morning ravenous and ate every 45 minutes or so for about 3 hours.  The last feeding she just stayed latched on and kept going much longer than usual, then within 10 minutes after finishing she had spit up a LOT more milk than usual (as in several tablespoons full, not just a teaspoon or so).  Anyone seen this happen before?  I've been letting her decide when she's done, but if she's going to overeat like this and make herself sick I'm wondering whether I should gently pull her off if she's going for way too long...

  • Last week DD projectile vomitted on DH....I guess it is possible...but I would let her decide when she is done...not me....but that is just my thoughts.

  • DS does this at almost every feeding.  I'm gonna talk to the pedi about it tomorrow at our 6 wk well visit,

  • Yes, DD overate once.  She looked like something out of the Exorcist when she spit up/puked up EVERYTHING she'd eaten.  She does tend to cluster feed before bed, and she ate alot this morning, but I haven't seen her spit up that much besides the one time.
  • DS did this before I weaned him I just started pulling him off after about 20 minutes on each side.

  • unfortunately, i don't produce enough for my DD so i have to pump and supplement w/ formula.  BUT when i was exclusively BFing early on, she would stay on forever!  i discovered she was using me as a pacifier and not necessarily hungry.  you may want to start timing how long she's on.  how old is she?

  • She is not "overeating".  Babies do not binge and purge like the big folks can.  Let her eat as long as she wants to.  Now, sometimes DS sucks longer than he eats for comfort.  Sounds like she may have been doing that. Please, let your DD decide how much is enough.  She's growing so quickly and needs that fuel.

  • I EBF and my DD has vomited up entire meals at least 4 times-- several ounces.  I think its b/c she over ate but hard to say.  One time she did cluster feed for awhile.  Now i'm scared that she'll over eat again...i still offer both sides though.

  • Yup. Had 4 case fo projectle vomiting because I left him on too long. Since shange over to bottles I haven;t had any issues. Once he stops sucking then I just take the bottle out of his mouth,
