April 2012 Moms

Ugh -- tell me I'm not a horrible momma

My son is 3.5 months old and he is currently sitting in his bouncy seat in front of the tv. He is watching a baby einstein video and I know These videos really don't make him smarter or whatever --- but he love to see the colors. I just hate the fact that he is propped in front of the television already --- oh we'll maybe it's ok every once in a while

  • Nope not terrible! I let mine watch DH play video games for a few minutes now and then. He likes all the colors and action. I think it would be overstimulating for long periods of time, but a few minutes and he's just tickled!

    This!  Mine laughs hysterically sometimes.

  • Evelyn loves sesame street.....she gets to resreve the tv for an hour each day.

  • If she's not sleeping, DD watches TV while I put DS down for his nap every day.  It's also on for at least an hour every day while DS watches Sesame Street, and she turns her head to see that too.  I don't think watching TV = ADHD/Learning disabilities/etc.  Watching tons of TV and doing little else isn't good for kids, but I truly don't think that a little bit is harmful.

  • Don't feel bad I do it too. It's the only way I can put DD down for a little while and not constantly be holding her!

I don't know much about the studies they have done with infants and TV viewing but I don't see why it's much different than a mobile or moving toy. Both have music and colors.

I agree. I know there are "studies" that link the two, but it isn't something that generally concerns me. LO receives much more stimulation throughout the day and genuinely enjoys watching TV for a few minutes here and there. I don't think it's a big deal. I asked my mom about it yesterday actually and she said I watched Little House on the Prairie all the time with her when I was a baby (lol) and I definitely don't have any ADD/ADHD/etc so TAKE THAT, ya researchers!

  • I agree with PP - not sure how TV is much different than other flashing lights toys at this age.

Now, the other day we plopped LO in her swing to watch Safe House with us. That was probably not a good idea. But, we agreed it was a one time thing.

  • I dont get why people freak out about the tv... Not a big deal at all imo. Unless they are older and thats all they want to do, I dont see the problem.
  • If so than I'm an absolutly horrible mom because just 5 mins ago he was playing on the floor watching keeping up with the Kardashians as I folded laundry.

  • I went into my office for a meeting a few weeks ago, and I called DH to see how our DD was doing (we're both off for the summer).

DH:  "We're doing great.  I changed her, fed her, and now we're watching Full Metal Jacket."

    Oh well.

Before LO was born, I was going to be a strict no TV until she's two and then PBS only Mama, but that soooo went out the window once she was born.

We're both educators with advanced degrees.  We have about 4000 books in our house, last count.  Our kid is going to be fine.  FINE.  Or at least that is what I tell myself when she's propped up in the Snugabunny in front of Family Guy.

  • L was crying so we started swaying her in front of the tv and she stopped. Me and DH are currently taking turns right now.

  • Lilly watches some tv too. I'll be more strict when she's older. It's not like I can make her go read a book at this age.

  • I sit Roe in her RnP to watch Mickey Mouse with Juliana while J finishes getting dressed and I load the car to leave. She LOVES it and it keeps her from fussing. *shrug* I don't think it's bad at all!

  • I did it with Edie all the time.  Never kid shows.  We watched TV together.  She's 21mo old now and hates TV.  Well, except "BEATS!" (fresh beat band).  She'll watch that for a good 5 minutes!

I try to keep DS turned away from the tv, but sometimes he will arch his back and crane his neck to see it or the computer screen.  I have to admit that I've let him just watch if there was something I really wanted to see for a few minutes.  I can't imagine that a little bit here or there hurts.  I could see how staring at a screen could mess with their vision though if they're only just learning depth perception adn things like that.
