Baby Names

Is Nora technically a nickname?

Our youngest's name is just Nora. Not digging the popularity, but it's not short for Eleanor. We kind of want Eleanor for if we have another girl later on. Everyone keeps asking me if Nora is short for anything. Nope. Just Nora. Is Nora a nn?

Re: Is Nora technically a nickname?

  • Nora is a very common nickname for Eleanor.

  • It can be a NN but it definitely works as a stand alone name. To me, if you have a Nora already, Eleanor would be off the table for a future DD.

  • According to my baby name book, Nora is a nickname for Eleanora, Leonora, and Honora.

EDITED TO ADD: Sorry, the book also has it as a standalone name as well.

    Also, I agree with this.

  • Nora is commonly a nickname for Eleanor, but is also perfectly good as a standalone name imo. I would definitely not do sisters named Eleanor and Nora- that's like naming your daughters Kate and Katherine.

  • I always thought of it as a stand alone name. I wouldn't use Eleanor for Nora's sibling, though.

  • I'd say Nora is like Lucy ? names that can be either full names or nicknames.

But I agree w/ PP ? if you have a Nora, Eleanor is definitely out for future kids.

This.  If you really love both names name her Eleanor with NN Nora.

    Totally agree.

  • I know four Eleanor's that all go by Ella or Ellie.  I know one Nora who is just Nora.  I like both names a lot.

  • We have a Norah, and while I do like Eleanor, I agree that the two shouldn't be used together for two different girls.
