Testing before beta?

Can we talk testing before betas? I'm not a POAS-type of person, so I don't have a specific plan in mind yet. (Although I'm thinking of testing the day before my beta to mentally prepare myself. That would put me at exactly 13 days past ER and 8dp5dt.) I'm wondering if you could tell me your experiences and/or plan?

Re: Testing before beta?

  • I tested the day before my beta (13 days post ER) so that I could mentally prepare myself for the news, plus I didn't want to receive bad news while I was at work.  The rest of my betas went downhill from there though.

For my first IVF, I tested 12 post ER (on a Tues, my beta was Fri) and it was positive.  For my FET, I tested a couple times and never really got anything significant so I was surprised I actually had a positive beta (something in the 20s, but still).  That turned into a week of beta hell, so this time around I think I'm not going to test before my beta Wednesday.  I'm going to just keep believing I'm pregnant until proven otherwise. :-)

  • I POAS for the first time ever out of any of my cycles this last cycle.  Well 6 times to be exact.  I started on day 11 after ER or 6dp5dt.  It was a BFN.  I was devastated and tested each day until my first beta which was 10dp5dt.  I even tested the morning of my beta just to double check. Beta confirmed it was a BFN.  Although it helped to be prepared, I was also driving myself crazy with "what ifs".  Reading about many who had negative hpts--even a BFN on the morning of beta and then turn out to have BFP with betas.  I doubt that for my next cycle I will POAS.

So really it comes down to you knowing yourself best and how you will deal with the possibility of the hpt coming back negative.  But hopefully in your case it will be a BFP.  Good luck!

2nd ectopic resulted in loss of tube. HSG revealed remaining tube is "severely torqued".
    IVF #1: ER 03/29/10; ET 04/01/10: transferred 2 embies; Beta #1 (9dp3dt)- 45; Beta #2 (11dp3dt)- 91= BFP
    FET#1: ET 04/18/12: transferred 4 embies; Beta #1: >2 = BFN
    IVF #2: ER 06/20/12; ET 6/25/12: transferred 2 embies; Beta #1 on 7/5/12= BFN
    8/16: hysteroscopy for polyp removal
11/11: hysteroscopy #2 for yet another polyp removal
    FET#2: ET 12/15/12: transferred 3 embies; Beta #1 (9dp5dt): 12/24/12: 426; Beta #2 (11dp5dt): 845= BFP
u/s 1/9= triplets!; miscarried all three on 1/10/13...

  • I start testing 2-3 days before beta.  My first cycle, I got a BFP each time that got darker with each day, which was nice to see and celebrate with DH in person at home rather than later in the day when we'd both be at work.

My second cycle, I started testing 3 days before.  They were all BFN.  But, I much preferred knowing this before the official blood test.  I don't think I could have handled getting that news at work, and I wouldn't have wanted to tell DH when he was at work either.

  • My first IVF I did not poas and they called in the afternoon with my bfn.  It was such a horrible surprise and it was so hard to process everything they said after the words I'm so sorry.  I swore I would never go for another beta without poas.  I just feel the need for a head's up...

  • I would say you are good to go at 8dp5dt!  My results are in my siggy.  My one suggestion is that you do use a FRER.

I have usually waited until my AF showed up with my pevious IUI cycles, but for IVF, I am not sure.  I am too scared to POAS, but at the same time, I don't know how devasted I will be if I hear my bad result on my beta day.  Ughh...this part isn't fun at all :(

I started POAS 3dp5dt and all were BFNs.  Although that (clearly) wasn't what I wanted to see, I am so glad I did because it allowed me to deal with my disappointment over several days instead of having an awful surprise on beta day.  I agree with PP though that it all depends on you - will you find it comforting or not?

  • I have only POAS once before my last beta.  There was only a faint second line. My beta came back positive but the number was very low so I did not get my hopes up.

I can usually tell if AF is on it's way so when my betas came back negative, I wasn't too surprised.
