LO is just about 6 weeks old. She was a very relaxed, easy going baby up until week 2, EB. She's very active/squirmy and after horrible advice from the LC in the hospital (I wish I had known), she basically tore up my nipples, so I started almost EPing, nursing just enough every day so she could remember how to latch but so I could still heal. She was a hungry baby and my supply was 2-3oz too short each day, so she got one bottle of formula.
We started noticing she got increasingly gassy and would scream and cry while passing gas or going to the bathroom. She was completely inconsolable for hours until basically she would tire herself out. She also had baby acne, but it got progressively worse, and started spreading to her body. She had a bad, persistent diaper rash at one point around he same time. She had bouts of diarrhea, and then I noticed bits of blood, too. She's also had a stuffier than usual nose and some minor wheezing/snoring when sleeping - I figured she was just stuffy? But maybe not now...
It was becoming obvious her symptoms improved, but didn't go away entirely, when she had her supplemented bottle and not my milk. We gave her more formula than BM a few days to try it out, and she was still fussy but it was survivable for all 3 of us. Last week we had our 1 month ped visit and he suggested cutting out diary - he said she looked fine in every other way. Knowing it could take up to 2 weeks, we decided to put her on formula and I would continue pumping & freezing, for (hopefully) when she's older, while maintaining a dairy-free diet, and at the same time increasing my pumping frequency so I could get the 24oz or so she drinks each day. We tried Nutrimigen (sp?) and Ailmentum knowing most babies with dairy allergies are allergic to soy too, but she wouldn't drink either at ALL. We switched to the soy version of what she was getting before.
After a day, she was the baby we brought home again. It's been a little over a week and she's a "normal" amount of fussiness. She doesn't cry like she did, and all of the colic-y symptoms are gone. Her acne is gone entirely and she seems so much happier. She does not cry when going to the bathroom.
I tried to go through my diet and think of what I could possibly be eating that was driving her crazy, but there was no one particular thing I could determine I was eating every day, except for dairy. We gave her one BM bottle yesterday and she was pretty fussy a few hours later, much more than with the soy formula.
We really want her on BM, and after this week or so with no BF at all I'm pretty certain it will be nearly impossible to get her to latch again, so that means EPing - but it really is heartbreaking to think that all of this milk I'm killing myself to save for her is making her sick. I've looked up the other common culprits in moms diet and I don't eat any of those.
We are going to wait a few more days and try again, but does anyone have any experience with this? We like and trust our ped, but I'm not sure whats right and normal. What if my milk is still making her sick?
Ofcourse, when I told my mom, she said me and my brother both had the same problem and were on soy formula... There is no history of food allergies, celiac, lactose intolerance, etc. in either one of our families.
Please help, any advice is appreciated!! Thank you!!
Re: BM & Dairy Sensitivity? Soy Formula? Advice Please (long!)
I've been diary free since LO was 3 days old. He had a very bloody poop and that is how he was diagnosed with a dairy intolerance. I cut out diary that day and he never had blood in his poop again. It may take up to 2 weeks but you may see improvement pretty quick. I would think that once you've been diary free for a few days your BM should be pretty clear.
My LO is the first in my family and dh's to have anything like this. GL

My LO is also dairy/soy intolerant. I have been eating a clean diet for about 10 days and she is still very fussy. From what I have read it takes up to 2 weeks to leave mom's system and then another two weeks to completely leave LO's system.
Hang in there, it should be getting better soon. If you haven't already, try the infant gas drops. Those are what saved our sanity for those first few really tough weeks.

Thanks so much for the replies girls, this is supposed to be so common but it's hard to find experiences that don't involve babies with a lot of other complicated allergies.
eskamo, thank you, we have been using the gas drops and they are definitely working wonders and making this bearable! We've also been using the mommys bliss gripe water and it seems to help also. She might just like the way it tastes though
Thank you both!! It's comforting to know I"m not alone.
