Hi All,
My husband and I are in the home study process and are beginning to research an out of state agency to partner with. We are in Massachusetts and will work with the adoption circle in MA and another state. We are thinking about Kansas or Utah based on our research thus far. Any suggestions or experiences with certain states?
Re: Out of State Agency
The agency we matched through was Adoption Connections out of Wichita, KS. Overall, we love them. There were a few drawbacks to working with them, but to us they were minor.
If you'd like more specific information, feel free to email me josiekolasa (at) gmail (dot) com
Good luck!
I'd be wary of Utah. Agencies in UT will say that UT is adoption friendly... what they are referring to is birth parents rights. If you research dramatic cases in the news recently (one involving a birth father that wants his child back), the agency was in UT and flew the birth mom to UT so that birth father consent wasn't necessary.
I am paraphrasing all of this... but IMO UT laws may seem appealing to PAPs early on, but these same laws can create some ethical issues that could cause bigger issues later on.
Also, note, that some agencies (I could give you names) fly in out-of-state Emoms to Utah to take advantage of the laws and/or provide more assistance. What is important to note is that most of these Emoms are eligible for state medical coversage since they are out of state. Even if the intentions of the agency are good (to better care for Emom), your overall cost will go up since you'll have to cover medical expenses. It's worth noting.
JMHOpinions.
Recent developments have put our adoption plan on hold, but when we were researching agencies just a few weeks ago, we felt very leary of Utah agencies. It seemed like the costs were sky-high, the laws seemed "loose", and as PP stated, there seemed to be some negative press out there.

I just wanted to offer another perspective on Utah. We adopted in Utah, and had a great experience. No matter where you adopt, you need to make sure that your specific situation is ethical and follows the laws. Utah has a bad reputation recently, but there are ethical and unethical agencies everywhere. Make sure that you have a good agency and attorney and double check for yourselves that everything is done correctly.
About your question, if you are looking for another agency outside your state, make sure they can work ICPC with your state and accept your home study. Some agencies cannot place in all 50 states. Make that your first question so you don't waste your time collecting information on agencies that can't help you. Good luck!
Yes to all the above. I was the one that wrote to be cautious in UT... but as poster said, we all need to be aware of laws, etc in all states.
I guess I don't want to leave the impression that I think or would advise someone to not adopt from a UT agency/situation.... I just feel like there's more to be aware of...
