acid reflux - advice please

My daughter is 8.5 weeks old and spits up all the time. It hasn't been a problem until yesterday when she was uncomfortable and mostly inconsolable for hours. We call the on call pedi who said it was reflux. He instructed us to give her Mylanta/Maylox, 1 tsp every 3-4 hours and call our pediatrician in the morning. We and are waiting for a call back, but they haven't yet and don't return to the office until Monday.

If we don't get to talk to them until Monday, I need some feedback if any of you have had experience with this. Is it okay to continue using the Mylanta as needed for a couple of days? LO sleeps on an incline and is EBF. Any other advice on how to handle the reflux?

Re: acid reflux - advice please

  • Our pediatrician gave us some tips yesterday that may help, though I can't say for sure because LO isn't here yet. She said, rather than burping LO right after feeding, hold them so they are as close to sitting up as possible for about 5 minutes, and then burp them. She said it may help the milk settle and allow the gas to come to the top of the stomach so they don't spit up as much. I hope she is right!

  • Our daughter is 4 weeks old and has had bad acid reflux the entire time. She has been on Zantac 3x/day at .6ml and it's the only thing that has really been helping. Ask your doctor if you can try this.

  • Definitely sounds like our daughter before she was put on Zantac .7 ml 2x's daily.  She would cry so hard her face would be purple like she was in pain. Totally inconsolable and it just broke my heart.  This started on a Fri and we couldn't get her in to the dr until Monday morning.  I just did the best that I could as far as consoling her, rocking her, feeding her (breast milk is best for acid reflux).  She eventually tired herself out and slept for a long time.  We gave her a nice bath and that seemed to relax her.  Keeping her on an incline after eating really helped too.  It was a really LONG weekend until we could get into the dr. but now she is as happy as can be.  We started to notice a difference after the first day on the meds.  Good luck!

  • We have been treating DD's reflux for about 3 weeks now.  We have found thaZantac helped after about 3 days. We also have the head of her crib elevated about 30 degrees (pedi's advice) and we keep her upright for about 15-20 min after se eats to let everything settle.  The mornings are the best time for her, reflux wise, so I always give her the first dose of Zantac around her mid-morning feeding so her last dose falls right before bedtime. This seems to help.
  • Everything everyone has said so far is what you need to do. Unfortunately, Zantac was not strong enough for my LO so we switched to Prevacid and he is much better now. Meds help the pain but are not meant to necessarily help the spitting up, my son still spits up A LOT. I have found that gripe water from Mommy's  Bliss also helps because along w/ reflux my son gets gassy. After the gripe water he instantly gets releif that we can hear. lol.
  • I have a near 4 week old with the same problem, except he gets 1/2 breastmilk and 1/2 formula (so I use the enfamil gentle ease).  I have never heard of giving a baby Mylanta...we use the baby gas x (little tummies or your CVS/RiteAid equivalent) and he is on a prescription prevacid type thing.  Since starting the medicine he has greatly improved.  Like a PP said, keep your LO upright for a while after feeding and it helps my son to get burped every ounce or so (makes the feeding time soooo long but I'd rather do that that have him scream).  I hold him upright for 15-20 minutes after feeding and he usually burps pretty well during that time by himself.  Try not to move your LO too much during this time as my pedi told me that it might cause the acid to come back up.

Since I don't know about the Mylanta I can't help with that, but having the incline for sleeping is great!  I hope your pedi can help and you get some relief for your little one soon!

  • doc literally called three mins after my last post. Said to continue the mylanta if she needs it and to bring her in if it doesn't improve.

  • We just switched our 4 week old to Nutramigen from being on Gentlease and then Prosobee - she was throwing up via nose and mouth - TONS of liquid.. screaming for hours on end - ... just overall not happy!

The Nutramigen has given us a NEW BABY.  She's been on it for 48 hours now and by 30 hours we could tell a massive change!  She isn't throwing up - she is having normal BM's - she isn't screaming anymore and is overall so much happier!!

I would totally suggest trying this formula for refulx - Addie is a totally much happier baby!!

Glad you found a great solution. Happy babies are so much fun! I'm EBF so it's just going to be me cutting foods out of my diet to see if that helps. (Oh cheese, I will miss you the most) And I LOVE the name Addie. (short for Addison?) So cute.

  • My LO was diagnosed with acid reflux last week. I went a whole week with her screaming from discomfort because her pedi was on vacation and the dr filling in didn't want to prescribe her anything and told me to treat it as colic. Finally at her 1 month check-up her pedi put her on Zantac .7ml 2x a day. I'm just starting to notice a difference and hoping it only gets better as we go.

How long did it take for other babies to feel relief when put on Zantac?
