C-sections

RCS tips and advice needed!

We go in Monday morning to have our 2nd son via RCS. The last csection I had was crazy. I was put on mag before and was on it for 24 hours after. I just remember feeling completely out of it. Since I really can't remember the hours after can anyone give me some tips on what to expect or what helped you during that time.

Anything would be great! :)

  • I was also on the mag and several other drugs to help with severe pre-e and HELLP symptoms, so I don't remember much of the before/after with my first son.

With my second, I went to the the intake/triage area of L and D, changed into a gown, and was put on monitors.  I hung out, watched a little TV, they took my BP several times and had me give a urine sample.  My hubby put on his scrubs.  I was there for about a half hour when the anethesiologist came in and did my epidural.  Then my OB came in and away we went to the surgical suite!  It took quite a while for my epidural to set up and they left my DH in the waiting room for what seemed like forever while waiting to get the epi to set up.  They brought him back in when they determined that the epi set up (only they only got the incision site, everything else was live--sucktastic) and we got started.  It took quite a while for the c-section itself because my son was so big (11 pounds, 10 ounces).  They had to vacuum him out--seriously.  Once he was out, they took him over to the table, weighed him (lots of talking about his weight), and DH got to hold him and bring him to me to see.  Once everything was put back together, the anethesiologist finally did his job right and knocked out my entire bottom half.  I was holding my son in recovery within a 1/2 hour of his birth.  We called my family and DH's family from recovery to tell them the good news.  I was in recovery for about an hour, was able to nurse DS2 right away, and then was wheeled to my post-delivery room.  Apart from the ridiculous amount of pain I felt while they were tugging DS2 out, it was a piece of cake.

  • Just had my c-section a little under 3 weeks ago. It was an RCS after a emergency one with my 1st son which I don't remember the 2nd half of.

With mine I was there about 2 hours early to get prepped. Meaning my IV, admittance paperwork and so they could monitor my BP before surgery to see what my normal was. I got a spinal so when it was about 5 min prior to my start time they wheeled me into the OR to start the spinal. Spinal took effect in about 5 min or so. They then gave me some nausea medicine and put me on oxygen. I was checked to see how numb I was then when they had the go ahead they put the barrier up and allowed my fiancee to come into the room. From the point my son was born in the next 5 min. I was in there for about another 10-15 then was taken to recovery for a little less than an hour where I was able to hold LO for the 1st time. After I was stable I was then taken back to my room.  All in all I was away from my room for about 1 1/2 hours.

Just remember during that you will be meeting your LO in a very short time. Definitely helped me. Also, if you don't feel right tell the anethesiologist. They should help you in anyway they can. I know I got lucky and got a good OR staff who was actually joking around with me during.

    Good luck!!

  • I was also out of it after my c/s with my DD.  I had pre-e and HELLP, it was a mess.  This time though no pre-e and I had a great RCS experience.

My best advice is to stay on top of the pain meds.  Push the button for the Morphine every 10 mins and when they stop using that, take the oral meds as often as you are allowed.  Between staying on top of meds and getting up out of bed as often as I could after getting the go ahead to both helped me afterwards.  Also, you may be in recovery for 1-2 hrs.  I didn't remember that from my first and I don't even remember bonding with her that much during that time because I was so drugged up.  But with my son it was a great time to do skin to skin and try to BF.
