April 2012 Moms

How do you feel about this?

This is the first real time I've been able to bump in days, so I'm being a total PW.  Sorry!

Last week while at a farmers market, this woman who runs a holistic booth stopped a girl, about 13 years old.  She had long hair put up in a ponytail.  This woman stopped her to tell her how she shouldn't wear her hair like that because if someone wanted to abduct her they could just grab her hair and drag her away.  Then told her mom how she needed to get the girl's hair cut or put it up in a bun.  This just really cheesed me off, where does this woman get off scaring a girl like this?  If that was me I would have had nightmares and been paranoid for a long time.

  • I would ream someone out for saying something like that to my kid. I don't want my girls to live in fear.

THIS.  She would get a serious earful from me.

  • If I were the mom I would've gone apeshit! What the flip? You do not scare my kid like that, especially over a ponytail.
i wish i could be joking but my dad is the music teacher at a church so he owuld be mad. we had sex, all the time how bad i know but we dont want to wait and he said GREAT OH KAY! and I was really feeling the wets? down there- too embarsed to say- but he acted like man.
  • That lady was way out of line. She sounds like a complete freak if you ask me. I would be pissed if someone tried to scare my child like that.
  • I think she was trying to recruit for her women's self defense class she teaches.  She's a total man-hater.  I don't think she likes my son because both of her ex-husbands were named Andrew.

But yes I was appalled and thought she was way out of line.

this but i would have nodded and said thankss to the women.  i wouldnt want my child to see me get confrontational or in a fight. i wouldnt want them to think fighting was ok and would hope they were a better person and walk away.

I'm not usually a confrontational person but I would let it be known that it's not her place to tell my child how to wear her hair. There are other ways to handle the situation than fighthing or using harsh language. I wouldn't want to do that around a child anyway.

Not acceptable, IMO. Really, that's just scaring a child and I'd likely say something to this woman. What did the mother say back?

The mom seemed like she was trying to be polite and listen, but when this wackadoo pulled out her bamboo bo-staff they were quick to move it along.

  • I would have been shocked...I'm always the one that when someone says something like that to me, I just kind of blank out and move on, and then later I'm like, "Ugh I wish I would have said __"  I need to be quicker with my comebacks!

I had a lady at a farmer's market stand say something off-putting to me too!  What is it about that place? LOL

  • Why do people feel it is okay to do crap like that with kids around? You lose all credibility when you try to scare me into changing my behavior by exaggerating the danger.

A Trooper ticketed DH last winter for not moving over a lane for a stopped emergency vehicle. The 4 year old is in the back seat, DH didn't argue at all, but the guy felt it was appropriate to tell him all the horrible things that could happen to our "lovely family" if we blew a tire. Thank you sir, for giving DD nightmares about one of the most unlikely scenarios possible.

Like PP said, I would have been dumbstruck and pissed, had I been there.

  • I would have just walked off and  told the 13 year old not to " feed the crazies" in life. I'd probably joke around about how insane the woman is... Because she is clearly insane. The woman is off her rocker, but I wouldn't see the point in yelling and causing a commotion.

I'm not saying I'd fight with her, but I would give her a piece of my mind, in front of my kids. Particularly emphasizing that it's one thing to take reasonable measures to be safe, and another to be a fear mongering boogeyman scaring kids.

I would have said, ,"lady, if abduction prevention was as easy as wearing your hair in a bun, we'd all do it." then I'd give her an exaggerated eye roll and for good measure I'd throw on an, "ohhhhh, SHORT hair must be the reason boys never get abducted.... Oh wait, that can't be right"" with further eye rolling.

  • Holy cow, so not cool!  I really have no idea how I'd react if it was me.  I can only picture myself standing with my mouth open in stunned disbelief.  I'd like to think I'd have an awesome, calm reaction where I give her a peace of my mind but don't freak out on her, but I'm not usually that fast on my feet.
