I've been looking at the IKEA cribs online and I have several questions: https://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/categories/departments/childrens_ikea/18755/

All 4 models (Sniglar, Hensvik, Gulliver, Sundvik) says:

"One bed side can be removed when the child is big enough to climb into/out of the bed."

But only the Sundvik says, " Converts into a toddler bed."

I'm confused - are they not the same thing? If not, can you tell me what's the difference?

And what does IKEA mean when it says "Conversion kit included" for all 4 models? Convert to what?

Which model did you get and why?

Finally, all 4 models say to use a 27 1/2x52" crib mattress. Did you have any issues with using non-IKEA mattresses? I'm considering either the Sealy soybean foam or the Colgate Classica I.

I dont have an Ikea crib but I can offer some advice. when a crib is converted to a toddler bed it means you just take off one side and have rhe mattress at the very bottom. the conversion kit is for you to block off the areas they were connected and keep it sturdy. as far as mattresses, I have heard that there are very few that fit in the IKEA crib that arent from them.

we got the sundvik. it has two levels for the mattress. at the lowest level, you can take off one side and then add a small wood bar to the bottom to convert it to a toddler bed. so that single wood add-on is what they call the 'conversion kit' i guess

we got the sealy soybean and it fits great. i thought the ikea mattresses looked a little too cheap/soft.

note i'm a ftm so i haven't used it yet, but it looks like it will work just fine.

We have the Gulliver, and we really love it. It has two height settings and when at the bottom you can take off a side to have it as a small toddler bed. We already had a twin size bed that we will put on the floor when he is ready for that, so we didn't really need the whole true convertible deal. We didn't like the look of the Ikea mattresses, so I did a TON of googling, and we ended up getting the Colgate Classica III mattress. It came the other day and fits perfectly! You want to make sure you get a mattress with square edges, not rounded. All in all, I would highly recommend the Ikea cribs, very sturdy and with the right mattress it is a great deal for the money...

I think the IKEA website is really confusing so we went in store to check it out. I got the Sundvik because we just liked that model better. From the models in the store, I believe all of them convert to a toddler bed by just removing one side. I don't know why it says online that the Sundvik converts into a toddler bed. I know they don't convert to a twin/full size bed like some of the 4-1 conversion cribs from other stores. I got an IKEA mattress to avoid the last problem completely.

We have the Gulliver. The Sealy Soybean mattress fits perfectly in it. Like a PP said, it has directions and parts for you to change the crib; first from high mattress to lower mattress, and then taking off the side to have a 3-sided toddler bed.

We have the Sundvik and I believe it came with a small piece for the 4th side (once removed) when converted to toddler bed (so it essentially has 3 1/2 sides). I think with the others, you just remove one whole side so it would be a 3 sided bed?

We have the Sniglar. It does convert into a a stable-with-3-sides toddler bed (or sidecar, as we use it) with no additional gear needed. We have a Naturepedic mattress. It is VERY snug, but fits.
