C-sections

Induction turned into csection?

My LO is apparently very cozy in there so its looking like I'll have to be induced....which I've heard puts you at a greater risk for csection, which I might have to do anyway for medical reasons.  Anyone have to have a csection after being induced?  What do you think my odds are?  What should I know?

Re: Induction turned into csection?

  • We can't tell you what your odds are.  Ask your OB to discuss your bishop score (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bishop_score).  That was what pushed me in the direction of a scheduled c/s instead of an induction- I was at a 0, and had no interest in a failed induction turned c/s.

    Good luck to you!

  • Thanks, yeah, that was silly to ask about my odds, clearly no one can answer that!  Good to know that you scheduled a csection rather than induction.  I'm going to talk to my dr about that as well, I agree with you...no need to go thru a failed induction and end up with a csection either way!
  • I've been induced twice (34 and 35 weeks) due to various complications. The first time was successful and the second time resulted in a c-section. The failed induction was because baby wasn't tolerating labor well and it was safer to get her out quickly.

It would be smart to talk with your OB about when they'd decide an induction had failed. Even though it ended in a c-section, I was glad we tried the induction with DD2 because a vaginal delivery is often an easier recovery. We moved to the c-section plan after just a few hours, which I appreciated. I know some people have horror stories of going through induced labor, pushing, and ending up with a c-section.

  • I was induced with DD and ended up with a c-section after pushing for 3 hours with absolutely no progress ( turns out she had a 15in head!).  A friend of mine was induced with both her pregnancies and had the first one in 8 hours and the second in about 4 both vaginally. You never know. I think it's worth a shot to at least try if you're up for it and are a candidate. Like I said, you never know!

  • I was induced at 40 weeks and 3 days. Labored all day and ended with a c section. Only dilated to 7cm.  My lo ended up weighing 9lbs 1.5 oz. so im glad I had a c section and with the next it will be a repeat c section. You won't know till you get there and see what happens. I for some reason always thought I would end up with a c section. But you never really know! Good luck
  • My story is a bit different because I was induced at 38 weeks with HELLP but it did end in a c-section.

I labored unsuccessfully for 24 full hours and my body only dialated to 5 centimeters... that's with a foley balloon and pitocin. Ultimately my lo's heart rate kept dropping with increasing the pitocin so the dr said my only option was a c-section.

Turns out he became transverse after my water broke so he would never have come down vaginally anyways.

  • I had a c-section after a 3 day induction where I never got passed 3 centimeters. I would suggest to not let them break your water. Once your water breaks the time clock starts ticking. As long as you and baby are tolerating the induction it can continue on for a while. I let them break my water at the beginning of the 3rd day and then 10 hours later they started worrying about potential for infection, so they proceeded with a c-section.

I would just suggest having open communication with your doctor and tell them you would like to try everything possible for a vaginal delivery, so please don't do any interventions that would set a "time constraint".

  • I was induced the day after my water broke( 36 weeks 3 days).  I progressed quickly and then pushed for 2.5 hours.  DS didn't want to come down at all so I ended up with a c-section.  In my situation, DS was still really high up.  I think that was the reason I ended us with a c-section.

    Good Luck!!!

  • My sister was induced with both her boys & it was successful. Then I was induced but with pretty much being closed up, I knew I was a high risk for a c/s. I didn't progress quick at all (even before the induction I was apparently having strong contractions that I didn't feel & those didn't help with progression). And DD wasn't handling the pitocin contractions well. So I had a c/s.

    Good luck! :)

  • I had a c-section after a failed induction. nothing happened for three days - they tried everything!  i was begging for the c-section i was so tired. I never felt a contraction even with 9 hours of pit.
  • I was induced at 41 weeks.  I did get to a 10 and pushed for three hours, but LO was sunny side up and a little bit sideways and I did end up with a csection.  If I could re-do it, I wouldn't have the induction that early.  I would go until 42 weeks.  Babies usually come eventually and due dates can be off!   The induction was no fun because they wanted to continuously monitor the baby and I wasn't allowed to walk around while in labor.  I also let them break my water and next time I won't.

  • I was induced and ended up with a CS.  They started at 9pm with cervadil, I was already dialated to 2 and 70% effaced.  By 6 am my contractions were every 5 minutes, but they were in my back and they weren't coming up on the monitor.  Finally they fixed that and began pitocin at 7am.  At 9am I was at 5. 11 am 7 and when they checked, they broke my water by accident.   Around 2, DS's heart rate dropped.  I was at 8 and they started measuring things internally.  3:30 still at 8 and the doctor told me I was free to wait it out because I wasn't technically stalled yet, but the baby was sunny side up and she believed he was tilted and stuck.  She gave me the option of c-section or wait it out (but if his heart rate dropped again, it would be an emergency csection- he had dropped a few times since 2).  DH and I agreed a csection would be best.  As they were prepping me for the csection, his heart rate dropped again and I was rushed in as an emergency csection.  Since we had already decided, DH got to go too.   I wouldn't change it for the world.  My only fear was that DH wouldn't be with us during the csection.  And he wouldnt have been if it had we not already been prepping for one. At my six weeks the doc told me I had the choice of VBAC or csection next go around.  I will probably do a scheduled csection.
  • I was induced on my due date with DS and had an emergency c/s withing 4hrs of the induction starting b/c they lost his HR and it didn't recover in enough time. I think my OB knew that I would end up with a c/s ultimately due to other factors. I had been going in for blood work and NST for the 2wks leading up to my due date.

My WBC was high and they couldn't figure out why, and I had also been contracting for a few weeks with BH that had been really regular, but weren't doing anything productive. I was admitted on a Monday night for observation and long story short by just before noon on Tuesday DS was born.

All I had was pitocin, they didn't put any of the cervical meds in b/c they had more control over the meds since they could shut the pitocin off if they had to.

  • That was me.  No one was in distress and fortunately my son was doing well the whole time but enough was enough and he had to come out.

  • i just had my first LO via induction/c-section....induction just wasn't healthy for LO...contractions were intense with little dilating, and her heart rate kept fading out, and at one point they lost her heartbeat completely, that's when we were rushed to OR, to find out she was completely wrapped in her chord...i'm thankful they got her out when they did...i don't regret my csection at all, not a bad experience, very quick and painless!

    GL to you!

  • I was induced about 9 days overdue with DD. I labored for 25 hours. I was at 10cm but her head was too big for my pelvis, so we ended up with a c/s.

I don't know your odds, but I always wondered if the doctor could have found out via u/s whether or not this would be an issue before me laboring all that time! Not sure, but it would have helpful to know, rather than me be in pain for so long - argh!

  • I was induced with DD at 39 weeks and ended up with a c-section after 26 hours of labor. I fully dilated, but DD just didn't want to move into position. The doctor even flipped her, but she moved right back to her cozy sideways position and refused to budge.

  • I had a terrible failed induction. I was induced at 39w for high BP. Started with Cervidil, then pit the next morning, then my OB broke my water. A few hours later I was at 7cm. And then 12hrs later I had a fever and was still at 7cm. The only reason my OB let me go for so long w/o progress is because she knew how I much wanted a vaginal birth. Finally, I was taken to the OR, they tried to bolus my epidural to make it more effective but it didn't work so I just got a metric crap-ton of fentanyl during my section and was in the worst pain of my life but the fentanyl made it really hard for me to communicate that to anyone. Then after DD was finally out, my ute was so tired from the pit contractions it was all "f?ck this, I'm done" and I started hemorrhaging so I got some cytotec shoved up my butt and a shot of hemabate right into my poor uterus. I'm an OB nurse and I knew exactly what was happening and it was terrifying. I had a temp of 102 (prob because they checked my cervix so many times during the day) and the pain was so bad my BP was like 180/100+. Then once I was closed, someone mashed on my belly and shoved their hand/arm up my vag again to get clots out of me as I had started to bleed some more. I totally remember screaming during that part. Finally I got out of the OR and I somehow felt AMAZING though and the rest of my recovery went pretty well except for the uterine infection that had me re-hospitalized for 3 days on IV antibiotics. And my milk never really came in due to the massive blood loss/infection. So as bad as my whole experience was, I blame the induction for starting the cascade of craptacularness. None of that likely would have ever happened had it been a scheduled section.

HA!  This was the case with me as well.  big heads run on my side of the family.  so I would say if big heads run in your family you might want to just sign up for the c/section now:)  I was induced as well and pushed for 3.5 hours, but I was so glad I tried it.  I gave it my all and was ready to throw the towel in because I just wanted to see my kid.
