night time potty training - ?

LO has been daytime PT and accident free for about 2 weeks. This morning was the third day in a row (5 out of 7) that she has been dry in the morning. She's only 24 months - is this too early to go diaper free at night?

She was fighting the diaper, but that was a few weeks ago when she was still wetting at night. Now she doesn't mind it. I don't want to miss an opportunity, but I don't want to make her upset if she pees the bed. She peed once during naptime and got really upset...

Re: night time potty training - ?

  • Let her go diaper free at night. Make sure she visits the toilet before bed and try to restrict the amount of liquids she gets in the 30 minutes before bed-at least for a while.

Make sure her mattress is protected and that you have an extra sheet & blanket plus pjs on hand and you're good to go!

There will be accidents from time to time, that's just part of childhood, but this is not too early if she's been staying dry at night & has the hang of things during the day.

    Congrats on this new chapter!

  • Wow, lucky you, we are just starting potty training (although DD has had a training toilet seat for many months). I just read a book on it (the no-cry potty training solution) and she says that night time toilet training is something they need to be physically developed for, that means most kids use a diaper at night for months after they have been potty trained during the day. She says night-time dryness cannot be taught before the child is physically developed to do it. Sounds to me like your DD is already there, so why not try to go diaper free at night too? Perhaps get a plastic wrap for the mattress for the first couple of weeks?

I cannot wait for DD to be toilet trained and we are aiming at this summer. Unfortunately it is really difficult with so many different care takers (daycare and the fact that DD now lives half with me and half with her daddy). Let me know if you have any tips!

  • We did A LOT of naked time, starting around 18 months. We had also been doing EC, so she was used to going on the potty, but it was always initiated by us. For a long time she would go on the potty if we took her or she would go in her diaper if she had it on. Then she started not going so much in her diaper ( like when we went out she would hold it until we came home) and we took that as a cue that she was ready for the next step. There were lots of ups and downs but we never pressured her and tried to follow her lead. But, being a toddler, she didn't want to take time out from her play to pee and would get upset if we tried to take her. So we introduced chocolate chips as a reward. She loves chocolate. It totally worked and she was peeing all the time on the potty. Then came the stage where she refused to go on the potty if we suggested it. Lol. So we just stopped taking her and she went on her own. At the beginning she would pee if we put panties or pants on her. So we just did naked time or diaper. A little after we introduced the chocolate chips and we knew she could hold it, we started putting pants in her, but not panties. I know that sounds weird, but DH started it and she did not like pee running down her leg so it worked. We skipped trainers because they were too much like cloth diapers. She now wears panties sometimes, but not all the time because we can't really find any yet that are comfortable for her. Now she goes by herself without the chocolate chips. Hmmm.. What else? We had a special place for her potty. She liked that. Also lots of books and paper and markers to keep her busy on there. The first naked day she had 2-3 accidents and after that maybe had 10 total. Mostly when she was too preoccupied to go. I highly suggest the naked time. And just following her lead. Sorry this is so long and rambling. LO is sleeping in the car and I'm waiting for her to wake up!
