2+Moms...Diaper pails?

Are they really necessary, or can a regular trash can do the trick? I get that the diaper pails have a fancy schmancy way of supposedly keeping the diaper smell out of the room, but do they really work? Are they worth it?

I didint get one at first with the first baby until abt a week after he was born and I realized my whole house smelled like dirty diapers. I love ours and plan on getting another for the next baby as well. Its a matter of preference..some ppl use a garbage pail with a lid on it and say its fine too...

Not necessary. They don't really keep the smell all that great, and over time they all stink. We just used a small trash can and empty the bag each day. worked just fine.

When I use disposables, I just use these smaller smelly bags from Target (smells like Lavendar, etc). They keep the smell in as well as anything and we take them out every day or so.

I used one of those garbage cans where you step to pop up the lid. I did have a clip on deodorizer hanging on the inside. I never smelled anything.

We have always just used a covered garbage can, and used the kitchen bags in it, they seem to help lock in the smell. You do need to empty them at least every other day (or more if LO has had a very poopy day!) It`s much cheaper then the diaper genie, and all the refills!

We liked it just fine with the first baby.

When we had the 2nd, it was a joke. They filled up so fast that I was constantly buying the cartridges (cha-ching). I found that a garbage can with a swinging lid out on the back porch was 100x easier and cheaper. And less stinky.

I like the diaper genie and until recently it kept the smell out. For downstairs I started putting the poopy ones in those smelly bags PP mentioned...but that garbage is taken out more often than the genie.

I don't plan on buying a second but rather just using the one...I hope that works. If not, I'll get another.

We had one with our first and found that it didn't really retain the smell and refills were rediculously expensive. We used the small smelly bags PP mentioned as well. However, you can also get them from The Dollar Tree or 99cent only stores and they work just as good.

its a personal preference. also depends how frequently you empty your garbage.

we have the diaper genie for DS and found that by the time it started to get stinky, it needed to be emptied anyway. we don't create a lot of waste, and putting diapers in the kitchen trash made the whole house smell because we don't empty the trash every day.

I think they're a waste of money. I have a diaper caddy (filled with diapers, wipes, creams, etc.) that I can use in any room and it has scented bags attached to it for dirty diapers. Then they go right in the trash.

Works like a charm.

I have always used a metal can with a lid - I just empty it when I get a lot of stinky diapers and honestly A is almost three and almost potty trained and I've only recently (past few months) noticed that if we don't empty it when a poop diaper goes in then it stinks up the room. I just don't see the purpose of the fancy ones and having to buy the inserts or whatever they are...

I did a regular trash can for awhile, but it really started to smell up the room (doesn't help that I had twice as many diapers either) so I bought a Diaper Genie II Elite and I love that thing! I plan on getting another one for this baby as well, and I'm going to enjoy the fact that I won't have to empty it as much as the one I have now lol the joys of twins!

We have a diaper genie & are really happy with it. I felt it did a great job at containing the poop smell up until when DS turned like a year old. When you open it to toss a diaper in, you get a whiff of poop smell. But when it's closed I don't think you can smell it.

We had a Diaper Genie in DS's room for a little over a year. The plastic really started to smell so we upgraded to the Ubbi all steel diaper pail. I bought the same for this baby. It is pretty expensive but comes in really cute colors and we don't plan on being potty trained for awhile so it was worth the cost to me. It takes regular kitchen trash bags so I don't have the added expensive of buying specialty bags like the Genie requires.

Thanks for the feedback, ladies! Sorry for the post and run yesterday. We were on our way out the door to see Roger Waters at Yankee Stadium, so I didn't see these til this morning. I will probably just end up getting a regular trash can. The diaper pail I was looking at used regular trashbags, but it seemed kinda big and bulky and seriously...for $30...I can get a nice compact trash can with a lid and something else for the baby/nursery/house/groceries, etc. Thanks y'all!

This. I just take the trash out 1-2 times a day. I see no reason to buy a special trashcan with special bags.
