Parenting after 35

Early Intervention

A while back I posted my concerns about my daughter not walking and having issues with eating and you nice ladies advised me to contact EI, which I did, so I thought I'd let you know how it turned out.  She was evaluated this week and qualifies for physical therapy for gross motor skills (walking), occupational therapy for her continued issues with eating solids (even thought that has improved in the last few weeks), and speech therapy because she only uses 3 words in any kind of context and is not yet using gestures for communication.  I didn't expect the speech issue.  However, I am glad that she will get the help she needs now rather than finding out later that she could have gotten help to be on track when she was younger.  So thank you for your valuable insights.

Re: Early Intervention

  • I'm glad your daughter is receiving services.  I am a huge proponent of EI.  My daughter has autism and the gains she made through early intervention were astounding.  Good luck! :)

  • I missed the original post but I'm glad you reached out to EI! I'm a fan, too, since DS was born at 30 weeks so has had some catching up to do. They can only help and if in time it turns out it's not needed you're discharged and welcome to come back anytime. Great service - good luck and keep us posted!
  • I am happy you were able to qualify; good luck.
  • We had EI for the twins and loved them!!  As a SAHM, the adult interaction was an added perk!  Brady qualified for OT and the later both boys qualified for a general developmentalist.  They ended up being discharged at 2 1/2 instead of 3, which was a pleasant surprise.  I'm glad you called them!
  • I'm really glad your LO qualified and am sure that EI will do wonders.

Aaron is nearly done with EI (turns 3 next month) and the changes in him are amazing. While he still has some gross motor delays (doesn't jump still), he has mostly caught up in speech (beyond articulation issues) and the OT has worked wonders with his sensory issues.

  • Our DS (18 months) just qualified for speech and special ed.  I expected the speech, but was suprised by the special ed.  Apparently he doesn't have the play skills that he should by this age.  We are very happy that he is going to get the services that he needs, but sad that he needed it.  It is hard to adjust to the fact that he might get services 5 times a week.  Just got the news today so I am still absorbing it.  We will know for sure after his meeting at the end of the month.
