? For those who had a planned or RCS

Hi, I am scheduled for a RCS next week if I don't go into labor and have a VBAC prior. What happens in the two hours (I nderstand it could get bumped too) prior to the scheduled surgery time? Obviously I get the prepping part but does the time of the surgery mean that's when you go n the OR or when it starts? I have one more appointment with my dr prior and plan to ask but found myself wondering

Re: ? For those who had a planned or RCS

  • At my hospital, the c/s time is when they are prepped and start cutting. My c/s was scheduled for 7:30am last time around. The nurse prepping me kept saying they were running behind. They got me into the surgery suite at 7:20, and the anesthesiologist and my OB were standing there gloved up and just waiting around for me to get in there. They started as close to 7:30 as possible, and DD2 was born at 7:39.

  • And as far as what happens before the c/s, they have to give you IV fluids, a medicine to neutralize your stomach, they shave the area that will be cut for your c/s, and they gave DH scrubs to dress in.

  • The time of your surgery is largely an estimate and equates to the time the surgical suite is reserved for you. It has little to do with when your baby will be born. My physician liked to schedule for first thing in the morning but didn?t get her wish with me. I was schedule for 2:30 in the afternoon. The baby wasn?t born until 3:15.

When my doctor told me I?d need to arrive at the hospital two hours prior to my surgery time I started comparing the experience with going to the airport. You need time to check in at the front desk to let them know you are here and pay to check your luggage. Go through security complete with wardrobe change, scans, and pat-downs. Find your gate, wait for the plane, pilot, and flight crew to arrive, get on the plane, properly stow your belongings, and then go through all the preflight prep. You get the idea.

  • We had to be 2 hours early with each of my previous c/s, as well.  Went generally like this: get to hospital, sign a bunch of papers, change into gown, get hooked up to monitors, answer questions from nurses and anesthesia team, drink nasty drink to neutralize stomach acids, etc.  We had some down time in those few hours so we also chatted and had my parents come in to visit (not technically allowed but nurse bent the rules).  Finally my doctor arrived, we went to OR together, DH was taken to another room beside the OR to change, met us in OR as soon as anesthesiologist was done.  I was scheduled for 11:00 with DS and he was born at 11:35 (OB was running a bit late getting over to hospital) and scheduled for 7:30 with DD and she was born at 7:35.

  • Thanks ladies!
  • At my hospital, they said they schedule 2.5 hours ahead of surgery because people tend to run late. With that being said, it did take some time to plug in all my info (even though we registered the day before), get vitals, hook up to iv, meet with doctor and anesthesiologist. By that time, it was time for me to get wheeled back and start the spinal...good luck!!
  • We hung out talking to the nurse while hooked up to monitors. Mine was scheduled for noon but I didn't go back until 1ish because of an emer c/s

This except my catheter goes in BEFORE my spinal every time. No issues - I've gotten used to it........
