tmi post - a bit long...

first off i hope you all had a great holiday wknd!

this may be tmi, sorry....

mady has been on 3 antibiotics in the past 3 weeks to treat an ear infection. the last one (omnicef) is the one thats finally getting the infection to go away. about 3 days ago we started noticing a change in her poop. sometimes its like auburn colored packed brown sugar....sometimes it brings little tiny black hairs on it. (do you know what a malanga root vegetable looks like? those tiny black hairs is what im talking about).

i just got off the phone with the pediatrician and she told me that it could be the fact of the home-made fruit im making. sometimes fibers are harder to digest in some babies. i made pears for her last week and she thinks its that. she doesnt think its the antibiotic at all, and since shes not sick or running a fever than its not that either. she did tell me that if it continues they can always test the poop. the only meats she is on is turkey, ham, and chicken (all home made with veges), she also didnt see a concern in that either.

have any of you guys ever experienced this?

another question ---- sttn has turned into a fluke. since shes rolling over so easily now, when she turns onto her tummy she starts crying so i can put her back on her left side. she's waking up at 1am for a feeding and then again at 5am for her next feeding. she usually goes down for the night at 8:30pm with her final bottle. she never did this before...is this a growing phase shes going thru? she does have a heavy pee-pee diaper when she does wake at those hours so could it be that thats waking her up also?

sorry so long!

Re: tmi post - a bit long...

  • I've definitely seen a change in poop with a change in fruits or vegetables.  Fresh bananas also do that to their stool.  I can't say for sure about sttn but when a baby learns something new they almost always have disrupted sleep (rolling, crawling, walking).  That's very common.

  • Omnicef makes Sophia's poop turn red and look like it has little hairs on it. I am sure that is what it is. The first time I saw it - well it freaked me out.

  • When Nicholas was eating the purees, his poop looked different every day, depending on what he ate.  I wouldn't be to concerned about it unless you see blood in it.

In regards to the sleep issue, I hate to be the one to say it, but STTN is not a permanent thing as the baby books would have you believe. Nicky has gone through several phases of STTN and night wakings.  When he first started rolling, he would do the same thing Mady is doing now.  When that finally stopped, he went through seperation anxiety, followed by teething, followed by 4 months straight of STTN every night, followed by more teething and more seperation anxiety. He now sleeps in bed with us most nights. Unfortunately, that's just part of babyhood.

  • Zoe's poop is also different every day depending on what she ate, but I have never seen what you are describing. As for STTN, I know it is normal for them to go through patterns of not doing it, but I would not be feeding her when she wakes up. If she has STTN before, and is at a good weight for her age and size, then she shouldn't really be eating during the night. If she is crying a lot, I would go in and console her, but try to get her to go back to sleep without eating. I wouldn't even change her diaper, that will just wake her up more. When Zoe has nights when she wakes up, I usually ignore her for about 1/2 hour and see if she'll go back to sleep on her own, if she's really hysterical or still noisy after 1/2 hour, then I'll go in and give her the pacifier and try to help her back to sleep.

Ditto! I could have written the exact same response! His poop changes constantly but it does sound like its the antibiotic causing the hairlike stuff to show up. As for the STTN I never go into Mikey's room unless he starts crying hysterically. I can tell the difference with his cries so I know when I need to go in there. There have been times when he has woken up screaming hysterically because he had what I believe was a nightmare. I did pick him up because there was no way he'd stop on his own especially because by then he was standing in his crib crying. I agree that you shouldn't feed her when she does wake up crying. She shouldn't need to eat in the middle of the night at her age.

  • Cedric was on Omnicef once, and I honestly don't remember the poop like you describe, but it's probably b/c he had such awful diarrhea on any antibiotic that we were just thrilled when it was close to solid.  In fact, we had to use Culturelle pro-biotic powder to help that, otherwise he would get a horrible skin-breaking diaper rash.  Seriously, he has scars on his butt from the broken skin, it's so sad.

Anyhow, as far as the sttn, I agree that it can be on again/off again.  It may be the ear infection that is bothering her at night (I hear that it can bother babies more at night when they lie down) and waking her.  Could also be teething or any disruption, like traveling.  I agree with the CIO advice.  Cedric woke us every night from 6 - 8 months at almost 2 hour intervals.  It was hell.  We tried tylenol to help with the teething pain, but it only worked sporadically.  I finally put my foot down and did CIO.  A few nights later he was sttn again.  Worked like a charm.

    Hope that helps!

    Tania

PS: That was not nearly TMI!
