I am so pleased with the way the transition has been going with DSS. Considering everything he has been through (previous post here) I think he is so appreciative of the life we are able to offer him. We got him into a summer camp that does a lot of fun things and field trips. This weekend he is on a camping trip with DH on a privately owned piece of land with awesome amenities. But it's how SS interacts with our other children that is amazing to me. SS has started telling me "I love you" when I drop him off in the mornings. God has definitely put His hand in this circumstance. Not too sure how to get him into counseling. I know he needs it considering all he's been through. I don't think he's learned good coping skills and bottles things inside instead of talking about his feelings being hurt. I dont' want to push him. I had a talk with him and told him I felt he got a very raw deal. That it must be hard to have every adult close to you, fail you in someway. I also told him that I am proud of him for not playing the victim role and that his father and I wnat him to be happy and will do all we can to provide him with an awesome life. It's so weird to say I have THREE kids! I love SS as my own son. it brings tears to my eyes to say that. I was so intimidated!

Personally having seen a school counselor and a private psychologist- it really just depends on the person. Some school counselors are great others are swamped with school politics and incredibly busy schedules. I will say school psychologist can sometimes be a little easier but he would miss class to speak with them and if other kids found out and weren't kind- that can be a problem. They also generally can't continue to see them in the summer. Some private practices offer appointments in the evening which negates missing school. Honestly I would try and see what he's comfortable with. I had a great school counselor who provided me with a lot of coping tools as an early teen and as an adult dealing with PTSD I had a wonderful woman at a private practice who challenged me and helped me face myself.
AWESOME! Thanks for that info. I was thinking private too. We have a great insurance that would cover it, so I think it would be the perfect thing for him. I just don't know HOW this kid has it this together after all he's seen and experienced.
