VBAC

Med free VBAC?

Did you have a med free VBAC?  I'm hoping to do a VBAC.  With my first birth I'd hoped to do as much as I could med free and use the tub, etc.  Not many providers around here are super supportive of of VBACs, and most say you need to be monitored the whole time.

Re: Med free VBAC?

  • I didn't go in set on a med free vbac, but I got one!  I didn't want the epi until I felt I really needed it, by the time I got there it was too late. My ob was great. She let me walk and do whatever I needed to. As long as I was med free she only required that I be monitored every hour for about 10 mins. I also didn't go to the hospital until I knew things were starting to move a little quicker. I was there less than 5 hours before DS was born. Good luck on your med free vbac. They are possible.

  • I also had a med free VBAC :). Not that I had time to get an epi anyway even if I thought about having one. I plan on doing a HBAC this time (as was originally planned with my VBAC) or at a birth center so I won't even be tempted to think about an epi or any other meds.

  • Yep, but I was monitored and had an IV when I was at the hospital. I showed up pushing (we had hoped to get there at that point), but the hospital I was at is very pro-VBAC and pro-med-free.

Definitely look for a provider as soon  as you can. Local doulas or childbirth educators might be able to help, as can your local ICAN group.

  • I did, although mine was a planned HBAC. I prepared with hypnobirthing and can even say it was intense but not actually painful. :).  Researching your providers and environment before hand to be in the most supportive environment is very important. I chose a home birth because I felt safer from the cascade of often unnecessary interventions done in the hospital. We had a great team of midwives who believed in my ability to deliver out baby and honestly I wasn't worried at all about uterine rupture. GL.
  • I had a med-free VBAC.  I was monitored the whole time, and I went in with the mindset of holding out as long as possible for the epi. By the time I was asking for it, I was in transition.  I had a wonderfully supportive L&D nurse who helped me stay out of bed yet monitored the whole time.  I labored on a birthing ball next to the bed (tried a rocking chair, but I liked the ball better).  You might not be walking around, but you can definetly be out of bed and monitored.

  • The hospital I had my c/s said I could do a VBAC but had to be monitored the entire time (I HATED the monitors).  So I found a home birthing midwife, and had a medfree home birth, it was amazing.

  • I have had 2 med free vbacs.  The first one was in the hospital.  I had a very supportive dr and hospital as well as a doula.  We got to the hospital and I was about 8cms and an hour later was complete.  I think once during that labor I had the fleeting thought, "pain meds would be nice!"  LOL  I didn't even voice the thought.  With my second vbac, an unintentional hbac, I remember thinking that if I were at the hospital they would give me something for the pain in my hips/thighs.  The pain was manageable through rocking and moving.  Still not entirely sure why I didn't believe that I was in labor!!!  LOL

  • I did!  I had wireless fetal monitoring and a waterbirth at the hospital.  I did receive Nubain for a pulled back muscle during early labor, but other than that it was pain med-free.  I went in prepared for anything though, since I'd learned my lesson during my previous labor experience.  I knew I wanted a med-free birth though, so my birth team completely supported me the entire labor.

Do you have a doula?  If not, I highly recommend getting one!  Is your SO supportive of med-free labor/birth?  GL to you!
