Hello and a ? - any successes after doc says 25% chance of success?

Hi!   I'm new to this board, and I'm hoping for a VBAC this time.  Problem is, my doc says that I'm in the 25th percentile for a possible VBAC.  I can't remember exactly what he said, but it was something about a bone that sticks out more than usual that makes the birth canal smaller than it should be.  In fact, it's what made me go to a c-section with DD, after dilating quickly and pushing for 3 hours.  She just got stuck.

 I really, really, really want a  VBAC this time, but it seems almost impossible.  Have any of you been in this position?

    Did he deliver your DD? Have you gotten a second opinion? Have you gathered information on this doctor to find out if he is really vbac-friendly? How many vbacs does he do a year?

    I would contact my local ICAN group and get their opinions on this doctor and names of other doctors to get 2nd opinions from.

    Get another opinion! I pushed 4+ hours with my first, and had a sucessful VBAC with my second, who was also a lot bigger than his brother. Good luck!

    This happened to me with DS. I never tried labor because my doctor scared me so much about this bone. He said it would be close to impossible to deliver and it would probably hurt my baby boy. Once he said that I was off to a csection. NOW, I find out through research that if you use different positions and even a chiro your pelvis can become more likely to open more so that your baby can get around this bone. I am not pregnant yet but next time around probably in a year and half or so I will be pushing really hard for a VBAC and the ability to try different pushing positions. GL with this one I really hope everything works out for you and you get your VBAC.

    Yes, he delivered DD, and he even had in his notes what happened and why she was stuck.  I've seen another doc in the practice who also noticed it after I asked questions during my yearly exam.  She didn't give me a percentage, but did say it would be very hard to deliver vaginally.  The practice also has midwives, and I am booking an appt with them for the next visit.  Haven't been able to yet bc of low HCG levels and a few other complications I've had to deal with, but I'm hoping they can help with other options as well.

    Thank you all - I'm glad there is hope.  I was so disappointed last time after such a relatively easy labor to end up with a c-section.  I'll keep looking and check those positions, too.

    Obviously I don't know your exact situation, but I wouldn't put much faith in these estimates. My friend is currently pregnant with her third baby. Her first was a c-section, after failure to progress when her labour stalled at 6 cms. Her second was a fast vbac with an 11 pound baby. She is seeing a midwife but had a mandatory OB consult because of the vbac. The OB told her that her chances of success are next to none because her pelvis is "clearly" too small to fit a baby. My friend's mouth was agape and told the OB that she delivered an 11 pound vbac baby with a four-hour labour, and apparently the OB still insisted that her pelvis was not able to fit a baby and tried to pressure her into another c-section.

    Obviously not all doctors are this shady, but I also don't think the OB can say that your chances are 25% and that you shouldn't try.

    I also pushed for three hours with my first (ended in c-section) and had a vbac with my second, with a super-fast two hour labour (from first contraction to babe-in-arms). Your first experience might not have any bearing on your second.

    My very pro-VBAC friendly practice (they had had two VBACs in the two weeks preceding my first appointment) told me I only had a 25% chance because my older daughter was OP and I pushed for two hours with no progress.

    I did have a successful VBAC because they really pushed hard to help me. My second was also OP, but the doctor managed to turn her enough to descend properly. We did need forceps to assist as she was stuck, but low enough that forceps were an option.

    It was not an easy delivery, but the recovery was like 1000x easier than my relatively easy c-section recovery.
